The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Can't get the router to work through the internet yet PC can still talk to it

Tags: Buffalo, Air Station G54 Wireless Router +NTL Home Broaband Internet Modem, Buffalo Air station WYR-G54, Trying to get internet working through the router
I wrongly purchsed a Netgear ADSL modem router and installed the sofware for this.I de-installed after realsing it was the wrong router.I then tried to go back to my old router but it won't work.
I am getting a direct ethernet signal from my NTL Home box(hence the reason I can get on to send this)so no problem there. The problem starts when I try to go through the router there's no joy.Funnily enough I DID manage to rectify the problem briefly by going through my PC's system restore but when I tried to set up a TKIP code in my router the next time I tried it wouldn't work.
Bottom line is that my PC can talk to my NTL Modem. My PC can also talk to the router but the router can't see the Virgin modem. When I plug the PC straight into the NTL modem the ethernet light comes on but when I plug the ethernet cable from the virgin box into the wan socket of the router nothing happens-any ideas guys?
It all worked fine up until I tried to install the ADSL router. Also what's ven more confusing is that I had fixed it briefly but now it doesn't work again!

I would say to start hold the reset button down on your router to send it back to factory defaults (unless you have a ton of configuration done inside the router).

After the router has been set back to factory defaults shut everything down and cable it.

one ethernet cable from modem to routers wan and one from routers lan ports to computer

Now, turn on the modem and allow it to connect.

Now turn on the routers and give it a minute to boot and go through DHCP etc...

Now turn on the computer.

If that doesnt work do an ipconfig /all and post the results here.

Also try turning it all off for about a half hour, then follow savone's directions.

If the computer's MAC address has been added to an access control list, leaving the NTL box off for that long should reset its entry in the switch's ACL so when you turn it all back on the router's MAC address should take the place of the PC's MAC address.

You could also try cloning the MAC into the router, but it's better to just reset the ACL if you can... so if it's ever necessary to reset the router to defaults it will work with your connection without having to clone the MAC again.

Sometimes you have to call the ISP's tech-support and have them reset the ACL manually, but most of them are setup to reset automatically after a certain amount of time so they don't have to spend the support-hours on that problem.

I seem to be up and running again(so far) so thanks for that guys.Although it did drop off before when I tried to input a TKIP pre-shared key. That couldn't affect anything as far as communication between the hard wired computer/router and the modem could it?

One other thing I wanted to ask the experts was on my buffalo it offers the option to "Allow specified wireless clients".I was told how to do this but can't now remember how although I remember that it's something to do with connecting each laptop to the airstation

05.11.2008 at 10:48AM PDT, ID: 21543050
Sounds like an access control list, to me. Probably MAC address based. Usually you can set them to allow only the MACs in the list, or to deny access to the MACs in the list.

I don't see where the WYR-G54 is sold in EU countries, though... do you have your time zone set correctly in your EE profile?

05.11.2008 at 11:31AM PDT, ID: 21543135
I just looked through the WYR-G54 manual and at the end it does say there is an ETSI version... if you search for WYR-G54 on the Buffalo support site for Europe you get 0 matches, though... still, I found no mention of any kind of access control list in the manual.

What version of WYR-G54 do you have, and where exactly does it say ''Allow specified wireless clients'' ?

Heh...  looking through the WYR-G54 manual's index I see it says ''AOSS Setup'' is on page 23, yet page 23 is blank in the PDF file I downloaded from the buffalotech.com website.

It's certainly one of the older models which looks like the one I have attached

According to the product guide at
http://www.buffalotech.com/files/downloads/AirStation_Prod_Gde_101805.pdf
it says the WYR-G54 doesn't support AOSS... I guess that's probably why page 23 is blank.

In the screen grab of the setup page you posted the wireless radio does not appear to be enabled. If that's the case, that would keep you from connecting to it wirelessly.

05.11.2008 at 01:26PM PDT, ID: 21543390
I don't have it enabled just now but at some point in the past I was able to view another computer in that "Allow specified wireless clients" section but can't now because I have restored to the factory default.I don't want to enable the wireless until I can have the optimum security

05.11.2008 at 03:58PM PDT, ID: 21543831
Well, it says they're all allowed by default... to add them to the list they must have previously connected (since the last time the router was reset to defaults). I don't see how you can ever add more to that list once you enable security... they must have connected to be added to the list, but they can't connect without being in the list if it's enabled. Apparently you have to disable that list when you want to add a new device to it.

Have you upgraded its firmware to the latest available?
It should tell the firmware version when you click the Management button on the left, then System Information.
