Unable to route data through layer 2 switches

I am testing some changes that I plan to make on our AS5300 access servers for our modem pool.  I am using a spare AS5300 in my office connected to a catalyst 3560.  For the testing, I am giving it an address on it's Fa0 interface of x.x.200.240 /24.  On the catalyst switch, it's plugged into port 10 configured as switchport access, vlan 200.  Vlan 200, along with several others, is trunked through about 3 catalyst 3560 switches to a Catalyst 6509 which is the gateway for Vlan 200.  On the catalyst 6509, Interface Vlan 200 is using ip address x.x.200.1 /24.  On the AS5300 (which acts as a cisco router), I have ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 x.x.240.1 and a default-gateway of x.x.240.1.  My understanding of how I've set this up is that traffic from the AS5300 arrives on Interface 10 on the catalyst 3560, which in turn is trunked to the 6509 over layer 2, but it doesn't seem to work.  From the 3560 that the AS5300 is connected to, I can ping x.x.240.1, but not from the AS5300 itself.
