Choosing a router

Ok I got a good question that I hope I get some good responses to. I have ADSL2+ and I am wondering if I can use a normal ADSL2+ modem and then a cable router for my small home LAN?

My second and more important question is what router to get, I'm not getting anything but linksys since Cisco is out of my price range and everyone else suck.
Should I get the ever popular/infamous WRT54GL and put DD-WRT on it or do I get something more beefy with a gigabit switch and 802.11N instead and then put DD-WRT on it?

I'm leaning toward the latter but I wouldn't know what router to get so some suggestions would be great.

Optional: I would like the router to be able to go into monitor mode so I can do raw packet inspection.
