Question

Cisco 1841 with 3G cellular card - will not connect to carrier

Asked by: Xtianu

Hello,

I've got a Cisco 1841 that I'm trying to connect to the internet using a 3G cellular card, but it just refuses to work - I can not connect to the internet through a laptop connected to fe0/1.

Cell 0/0/0 is constantly jumping between:
*Jul 28 13:42:14.131: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to up
*Jul 28 13:42:16.139: %LINK-5-CHANGED: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to reset
*Jul 28 13:42:21.275: %LINK-3-UPDOWN: Interface Cellular0/0/0, changed state to down

The SIM card does work, it's been tested in a dongle for a PC and can connect just fine there.

I've attached the "show cell 0/0/0 all" info and the router configuration. Hopefully someone's got an idea of what's going on here.

Thanks.

We'll assume it's actually a GSM-compatible card, and not a CDMA/EVDO card (which would need a HWIC-3G-CDMA module). :-)

What's the status (e.g. blinking, off, yellow, green) of the 4 LEDs (RSSI, WWAN, UMTS, HxDPA) across the bottom of the HWIC?

> chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*99#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"

The part in the middle of that should be "" "ATDT*99*1#" TIMEOUT

So from the
Router (config)#
prompt you would enter
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*99*1#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT

When the SIM is working in the PC dongle, is it dialing *99*, btw?

by: Darr247Posted on 2008-07-28 at 18:13:16ID: 22108052

Hmmm... That should be

chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*99*1#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"

not
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*99*1#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT

by: XtianuPosted on 2008-07-29 at 02:14:08ID: 22109733

The new chat-script didn't help, I'm afraid. It's still doing the same thing on the state changes. When dialing from a dongle, it's using client software, so I can't see what it's actually dialing - but it's possible to set up a connection of my own, dialing *99#.

On the back of the HWIC, the three first lights are green, the HSDPA one is not lit at all.

by: Darr247Posted on 2008-07-29 at 06:54:59ID: 22111446

OK... is it in the slot closest to the power cord, or the slot furthest away?

by: XtianuPosted on 2008-07-29 at 07:07:07ID: 22111564

Closest to the power slot.

by: Darr247Posted on 2008-07-29 at 11:49:51ID: 22114290

OK... that all looks good then.
Let's try the usual recommended debug commands so we can look at more of the output than just the %LINK messages, please.
e.g.
debug modem
debup chat
debug ppp negotiation
debug ppp event
debup ppp error

by: XtianuPosted on 2008-07-29 at 12:31:54ID: 22114759

debug ppp event doesn't exist as a command, only thing related to events that I could find was debug dialer events (sorry - I'm fairly new to Cisco equipment).

Attached the full debug for each time it tries to call.

When reading through the debug, I noticed that I'm running my old config again. Replaced it with the *99*1# in the gsm script, but got the same output (except for the connect command).

I also noticed that it's saying CHAP: Unable to authenticate for peer

No idea what that's about, but just to clarify - when dialing on a PC dongle, no authentication at all has to be done.

ppp chap hostname 3actionSwat@3.dk

is specifying a username.

Try clearing that by entering
no ppp chap hostname
e.g.
Router# configure terminal
Router(config)# interface cellular 0/0/0
Router(config-if)# no ppp chap hostname

Then exit back out

Have you tried dialing 98 instead... e.g.
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*98#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"
or
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*98*1#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"

Where did you come up with that username, btw, if there wasn't any indicated when connecting with the PC dongle?
I was under the impression that the IMEI and IMSI numbers from the SIM card are what tells the tower the card is activated and has service, and no user/pw was required.

When working on the configuration the first time, I more or less copied a sample configuration from some page online, then tuned it to match up with my setup. It had a hostname, which I just assumed to be the name of the Cisco 1841 once it's online.

But you're correct in the IMEI and IMSI beeing used for authentication. But I don't understand why saying that it can't authenticate the user.

Dialing *98*1# or *98# didn't work either, I'm afraid :(

I just spoke with the communications team, and they said that void/void might work as user/password. But how do I enter that?

> they said that void/void might work as user/password. But how do I enter that?

Well, if you put it in profile 2, you can specify that profile with
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*99*2#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"
or
chat-script gsm "" "ATDT*98*2#" TIMEOUT 60 "CONNECT"

Whichever number you decide is the correct one to use... I've seen both in sample configs. Verizon uses #777 for their CDMA/EVDO data cards here in the US, not *99 or *98.
