I did previously attempt to turn off DHCP... but now I'm having trouble getting the laptop to get to the router's setup again. Argh. I'll try to get it back to default again and then follow your suggestion.
However... when you say, "This is not a recommended way of setting up your internet..." you are specifically talking about this approach (turning off the router's DHCP and NAT), right?

If you check the setup of the dsl router you will probably find it is setup to provide DHCP, this will hand out an incorrect default gateway and DNS settings to the clients (prob a 192.168). Turn off DHCP and NAT if possible in the router config.
Connect the CABLE modem to one of the ethernet ports and connect the laptop to another - hopefully the laptop will then get a DHCP address from the cable modem and should be able to connect to the internet no problem. If that works the you should also be able to connect the laptop via wireless.
You may find that the cable provider only allows you to use one MAC address to connect to the internet, if so you wont be able to connect more than one computer to the internet without buying a cable router which works by hiding everything connected to it using nat, so the cable router thinks only one device is connected.
This is not a recommended way of setting up your internet, although it does work, the problem is your laptop will have a directly accessible internet IP address istead of being hidden behind a proper cable router, not very secure.
