Question

Use 1071HG Gateway as router with Cable modem?

Asked by: Galisteo8

When I previously used DSL, I had a 1071HG Gateway modem/router.  I had a PC hooked directly to this, and also utilized its wireless capability to connect a laptop.

I have now switched to cable broadband, and they provided a cable modem that has no built-in router.

I'd like to use the 1071HG as a router with my cable modem.  But my only option is to do the following:
- Run the cable to the cable modem
- Run an ethernet from the cable modem to one of the four Local Ethernet ports on the back of the 1071HG (this of course leaves the usual DSL RJ-11 input port empty)

After doing this, however, my laptop antenna can detect the router... but that means nothing, since simply powering up the router allows it to bee seen. So, most importantly.... even though I can access the router at its IP address, there is absolutely NO actual network (i.e. Internet) connectivity and I cannot get to the Internet.  It seems the 1071HG is not talking to my cable modem, although I thought it should since the four local ethernet ports are bi-directional.

Is there any solution for this?  (I'm running XP Home SE, by the way.)

If you check the setup of the dsl router you will probably find it is setup to provide DHCP, this will hand out an incorrect default gateway and DNS settings to the clients (prob a 192.168). Turn off DHCP and NAT if possible in the router config.
Connect the CABLE modem to one of the ethernet ports and connect the laptop to another - hopefully the laptop will then get a DHCP address from the cable modem and should be able to connect to the internet no problem. If that works the you should also be able to connect the laptop via wireless.
You may find that the cable provider only allows you to use one MAC address to connect to the internet, if so you wont be able to connect more than one computer to the internet without buying a cable router which works by hiding everything connected to it using nat, so the cable router thinks only one device is connected.
This is not a recommended way of setting up your internet, although it does work, the problem is your laptop will have a directly accessible internet IP address istead of being hidden behind a proper cable router, not very secure.

I did previously attempt to turn off DHCP... but now I'm having trouble getting the laptop to get to the router's setup again. Argh.  I'll try to get it back to default again and then follow your suggestion.

However... when you say, "This is not a recommended way of setting up your internet..." you are specifically talking about this approach (turning off the router's DHCP and NAT), right?

Yeah - its not a good idea to bypass the NAT - it offers a lot of protection against internet attacks, however with the type of router/connection you have, this is the only way I know to get it working. Honestly, its probably better to just buy a cable router - but I guess you probably realise that anyway. :)

there is a way to use the 2wire as a wireless repeater and disable the DSL functions but it will not work as a Router when used threw the local port. i use my 1000HG as a wireless repeater in my house all i had to do is put it into what they call bridge mode by disabling routing.after doing so  to get back into the 2wire u have to hard code ur ip settings. so for 1 computer it would work all u have to do is go into the ui and change some settings but it will only allow one computer to connect to the internet that way. better off getting a real router for this instead of using a DSL modem/router.

Alright, so "cable router" it is.  :)

Any recommendations on good, affordable wireless cable routers, or where I might shop for one?

Netgear stuff has always worked well for me - I would probably go to dabs or amazon - theres loads of different ones around depending on what features you need.

Something like this would work ok and is cheap (no wireless tho) http://www.broadbandbuyer.co.uk/Shop/ShopDetail.asp?ProductID=255
or the wireless one

Sorry, I didn't mean to leave this open.

However... I'm not certain how to close this question, since the "solutions" you provide as an answer to my original question -- Can this be done? -- each point to why it should NOT be done.  And I agree with your recommendations to NOT use the workarounds you each describe.  THEREFORE... I don't how to assign points, or if I even should.  lol

Any suggestions?

Well, I need to close this question.  I did eventually purchase a wireless cable router, so points to richy92 for his suggestions. And points to crashlite for assisting with pointing out the folly of my original plan to use the old DSL router.  Thanks.
