Question

Configuring router gigabit port for trunking

Asked by: astring

Hello,
I have a CIsco 2821 with the 16 port switch module in it.  The switch module is at capacity so we are adding a Cisco 3560 switch.  Since ports are at a premium, I want to connect the new switch to one of the gigabit ports on the router side.  Do I just configure sub-interfaces with dot1Q?  I will need to trunk both voice and data vlans across the interface.  Thanks.

Yep, configure dot1q on both sides and sub interfaces on the router. You will also need to specify the switch port on the 3560 as a trunk port

Yes here is the config

interface gig 0/1
no ip add
!
interface gigabit 0/1.1
description DATA VLAN
encapsulation dot1q 1
!
interface gigabit 0/1.2
description VOICE VLAN
encapsulation dot1q 2

SWITCH CONFIG

interface fa 0/24
switchport trunk encap dot1q
switchport mode trunk

Oops forgot IPs

interface gigabit 0/1.1
ip address 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0
description DATA VLAN
encapsulation dot1q 1
!
interface gigabit 0/1.2

I have configured the interface as recommended:
interface GigabitEthernet0/0
 no ip address
 duplex auto
 speed 100
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/0.1
description Data uplink to MKTG Switch
 encapsulation dot1Q 50
 no snmp trap link-status
!
interface GigabitEthernet0/0.2
description Voice Uplink to MKTG switch
 encapsulation dot1Q 150
 no snmp trap link-status

VLAN50 is data and VLAN 150 is voice.  However, when I attempt to assign the address 192.168.150.252 to int g0/0.2, I receive the error 192.168.150.0 overlaps with Vlan150.  The 192.168.150.0 network is the voice vlan.  Same thing happens when trying to assign 192.168.50.23 to int g0/0.1.  Where am I going wrong.  Thanks.

If you have a vlan interface already assigned to these iP ranges the best thing to do is to just use that IP address as your gateway for each.

"ip unnumbered vlan 150"

by: astringPosted on 2008-12-22 at 12:34:33ID: 23229365

Thanks bkepford.  Just to clarify, I would add the ip unnumbered line using the appropriate vlan ID inder each of the subinterfaces?  Is there anything else I would need to do.  Thanks again.

Hmm weird I thought I replied to this. I guess I didn't hit submit.

The gigabit interface is not like the switchports it may be best to delete the vlan 150 interface and add the ip address on the interface itself. But technically I believe either should work.

They should both accomplish the same thing.

Thanks.  I have attached the config as it is now.  If you would look it over to see if I have made any mistakes I would appreciate it.

Looks good, Did you test pingability to the VLAN interfaces and that traffic can pass from the marketing switch to both VLANs?
