Question

Netscreen 5GT Setup - Static Internal IP for Trusted Port

Asked by: pbguy

Need some help with a Netscreen 5GT Setup.  Newbie to this hardware so you won't offend by providing "baby" instructions.  Please provide instructions for setup though the web interface.

This is what I'm trying to do:

I have Comcast Business line.  Modem has 5 IPs assigned to it.  Modem has it's own firewall built in which (I assume) we can disregard (except fr the factthat it's there.)

Comcast Modem goes to UNTRUST port on the Netscreen 5GT.

Server goes to the TRUSTED port #3 on the Netscreen 5GT.

Netscreen 5GT is set up as TRUST/UNTRUST (so the 4 ports available are TRUSTED ports)

Currently UNTRUST grabs IP via DCHP.

I want to assign one of the public IP addresses to the server (traffic for public ip 22.22.22.22 is routed to the server on port 3 of the Netscreen)  However, I would like to use an internal static IP address for the server itself (when I set up networking on the server, I want to use a static internal IP like 192.168.1.103 )

Please advise exactly how to set this up, and again pls keep in mid I'm using the web interface for this.  If you have any questions about my current setup happy to elaborate.

Thanks for you help with this!

In Network -> Interfaces, edit your Untrust interface. Go to MIP, and create a new entry. Mapped IP = public IP, Host IP = private IP, Netmask = 255.255.255.255
finished!

Almost. Create a Policy Untrust to Trust, Source = any, Destination = MIP, Service = any, Action = Permit, and check "Position at Top".

If you like, you can restrict the service section to get more control, else everything for the public IP will go thru to the server.

Qlemo - probably close.  I'm using rev 5.1 so my options under MIP are

mapped iP
Netmask
Host IP
Host Virtual Router Name (options are trust-VR and untrust-VR -- what d I do with this??)

The thing I'm missing is how does it know to assign my internal 192.168.1.103 IP address to the physical port 3 on the Netscreen (where the cable for the server is plugged in) ??  Or does this just not matter after I set the network settings on the server to that IP?

Thanks again for your help!

Port 3 should have an address of the same IP network as the server (and other PCs, if connected), this would be something like 192.168.1.100. That way server and NetScreen communicate without further set up, smooth and easy.

In MIP setup you use trust-VR. You won't use untrust-vr in normal scenarios. Virtual router (VR) is used to separate routing domains - if you have dynamic routes and devices are exchangeing those.
