Question

Router Won't Reset - Linksys RVS4000

Asked by: stlbridge

After a client made a VERY long password of 28 characters, the router will not allow logon with Administrator as username.  Client has tried everything possible to reset the router, but still no luck.  We are considering an exorcisim, but we figured there was a magic method to reseting an RVS4000 Router.

Side Note:  Don't buy this thing.  Linksys has really dissapointed me lately. Comment wasn't based solely due to password freaking the router out.  Many many many issues with little satisfaction.

The button on the back or bottom did not work to reset to factory defualts?

by: stlbridgePosted on 2009-03-25 at 20:32:55ID: 23987106

Back is where it was.  He held it for 30seconds, then 1 min.  Each with power on and off.  I'm sure there's something he didn't do.  It seems very silly.

Yeah, you almost need to make sure in person.  Or maybe the button no worky.

What's the magic technique?  Power off, hold 30, plug in, release/renew?

by: Compnecessity1Posted on 2009-03-25 at 21:10:13ID: 23987240

I wouldn't say there is a magic technique.  I'm just saying if it's a user at a diffrent site you never know.
Must be a defective button.

Delegation ... use of outright delegation -- the "act on behalf of"
privileges, as opposed to sharing ("you can see my data") privileges --
Sharing can work with access only the front end servers
(so I can see colleagues' calendars, for example), but delegation does not,
currently. My experience, and YMMV, is that Sharing is needed more than
Delegation.

You need to disconnect all ethernet cables to it before doing the factory reset.  Then hold in the reset button for 10 (or maybe its 30 seconds?).

See, rbdnz, that's the same problem I'm having.  I can't find the "linksys" way to do this.  I'm sure it's some silly step I am overlooking.

stlbridge,

Just looking at the screenshot... the default administator username is "admin" instead of "administator"

LOL.  Not that easy, I'm afraid.  Thanks for the suggestion. I had initially set it to administrator when I configured it.  I also set his ip range to 192.168.192.xxx  .  Just some silly tricks to keep the neighbors away, really.  Being the range never change back to the default 192.168.1.1, this is how I know it's not resetting.  I may just give it a good punt through the yard if it doesn't get resolved tonight!  I'm going out for a visit.

stlbridge,

Good to see you solved the issue, however, can you be more specific to what solution you used? It might be helpful for future users with the same issue.
TFTPing the firmware in the device sounds nice, but the password issue would probably not allow you to do so. Alternatively, as you couldn't reset the default IP, did the TFTP server inside the device allow you to update the firmware on that IP even though the password was not working?

Thanks,

LucF

Luc, thank you for identifying this as a problem.  Being I was not specific in why I chose my answer, I will now copy/paste from the link that was provided to better identify the specific solution to my problem.  Steps 1 - 5 specifically explain how to reset this particular router.  It is very tedious, but it worked for me.  It was also specific instructions.  It was not a suggestion that was unsure.  It was exactly what I wanted, and all other suggested solutions were not satisfactory.  Although they may have been remotely plausable, they were still wrong.

Please let me know if I should go in depth any further, as I would not want to leave a question accepted misleadingly.  If you would like, please check all of my other answers that I've accepted and reopen them if you feel the need.  I am more than happy to clarify the reasoning for any decision that I have accepted.

1)  Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
2)  Disconnect all wires from the router.
3)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
4)  Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
5)  Power down the router.
6)  Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
7)  Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
8)  Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
9)  Try to ping the router.  To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.   This will open a black DOS box.  Type in "ping 192.168.1.1"  (no quotes), then hit the Enter key.   You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out."   If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
10)  If the ping fails, ask the troll to question your intentions for chosing this as an answer.  He may desire your world to go BSOD, and if that is the case, troll is infected with chronic troll syndrome and the internet disease.
11)  Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1.  This will take you to your router's login page.  Leave the user name blank, then in the password field, enter "admin"  (with no quotes).  This will take you to your router setup page.  Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen).  Exit your browser.

Again, steps 1-5 worked best for me.  Sorry for any confusion.
