unfortunately using norton / anti-virus is not going to work, I'm dealing with 2 teenage boys with their own computers, so managing this from their computer is not an option, it will have to be managed from the network.

limit bandwidth with linksys router
Ok, so I guess this is going to be a two or three part question. I have had a very bad internet connection for a while now and I've found the cause, my girlfriends two teenage boys downloading crap on their PCs. One of them is using Utorrent.
so here are the two questions:
1. How can I limit the amount of bandwidth available to each one of them so it does not ruin my connection? Would I do this with QoS, and how? Is it possible to setup QoS for wireless connections?
2. How can I block Utorrent from having network access using my linksys wrt54g router?

its not a website that needs to be blocked, its a file sharing program. Unfortunately, there isnt a good way to block this program, as the user can set the program to use any port that they want, so blocking by port is not an option. Unfortunately, I had to be a little more extreme than I would have liked. I set up the router with a new WPA2-PSK and did not give them the key, so now they are plugged directly into the router and I've used the linksys QoS to limit the bandwidth to their ports. Until a firmware / router comes out that will allow me to specifically limit bandwidth by MAC address for wireless connections, this will have to do I'm afraid.

Also, reg. blocking Utorrent access. You could try to use your Anti-Virus's integrated intrusion detection (IDS) tool and simply add the site to the blocked list. Symantec comes with a built in IDS tool and it's easy to add sites you want to block access to. If you want to get fancier you could download the open-source IDS software, Snort. It takes a bit of reading and practice but it is well worthwhile. As it also protects against possible attacks. See more info here: Snort.org
