I use a Netgear DG834GT ADSL router at home to connect to the internet.
The most recent firmware update, 1.02.19 introduced VPN support for up to 5 clients ( see http://kb.netgear.com/app/
My Apple iPhone 3G supports the use of a VPN, either via L2TP, PPTP or IPSec. I'd like to connect to my home router from my iPhone through a VPN while I'm away from home.
Can anybody provide the exact steps needed to do this, both on the router and the iPhone?

On the page I've given the link to in my question, it states that the new firmware has "Added support for up to five Virtual Private Network (VPN) endpoints, including a VPN wizard for easy configuration and a VPN status log. This feature can be found under the Advanced menu."
I thought this was more substantial than just VPN pass through.
Am I wrong?

Yeah but please note that it says it supports "up to 5 endpoints" meaning 5 external VPN servers located in your intranet. That does not mean that it can "termiante" VPN connections. It can just redirect them to internal servers. I admit that this is really non-sense to support up to 5 different VPN servers which is very unlikely for someone having 5 VPN servers at home. I guess it rather sounds like it would allow 5 concurrent VPN sessions rather than utilizing 5 different VPN hosts at first sight. But as you see it says "endpoints" not "sessions".

Hi,
The answer is you can't. Your device DG834GT does not have a built in VPN server. It only supports "Secure access to your office or corporate network using VPN pass-through." VPN-PAss-through means it can redirect VPN traffic to an inside VPN host. While it can not act as a VPN server.
So unless you have a VPN server in your intranet (your internal wired/wireless network) you can not establish vpn connections to your home.
