Question

Inspiron 2500 XP Home Laptop ablle to Connect to Wireless Router but not Internet

Asked by: danjava

Hi:

Trying to revive an old Dell Inspiron 2500 running XP Home. I am able to connect/talk
to my Netgear Wireless router, but cannot get on the Internet. Three other computers
on the same network are accessing the internet without a problem.

I have tried  the XP winsock repair program which did not fix the problem, and two
different wireless cards, a Linksys and Zytel, that did not work either.

Any ideas suggestions,

regards

Dan Myers

is there a firewall on the computer? Can you make sure that its receiving the correct dhcp information such as a gateway, dns server (if you use one)?

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 16:26:04ID: 24662710

Open a command prompt (start/run and CMD) and in the box type:

ipconfig /all >temp.txt
netstat -r >>temp.txt

And post the file temp.txt here please.

Also please try in the same window:
ping yahoo.com
If it doesn't find the host try
ping 209.191.93.53
If that times out please try
tracert -d 209.191.93.53
and let us know what you get. :)

Everything looks OK, and you got a reply from yahoo, please try this for a while:

ping -t www.yahoo.com (in a CMD window again)
Please see what the reply times are, and whether it drops any packets ("request timed out") over about a 5-10 minute period.

Time for ping to yahoo.com is generally around 40ms  every once in a while it goes to 60 or 100 for one
ping. So if it looks okay, what could be causing this mystery. Winsock fix did not repair it, two different wireless cards do not make a difference, two different browser does not make a difference, and I can ping website just cannot see them using a browser.

Open: Internet Options --> Connections --> LAN Settings and verify that Use Proxy Server is not checked.

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 19:18:17ID: 24663391

willcomp's suggestion is good, also you may have a problem with your MTU size or something like that, we'll check that next if necessary...you have tested other computers at the SAME time as this one?

The winsock fix was not warranted IMO.  Gotta figure things out one step at a time.

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 19:19:34ID: 24663402

Also please tell us what kind of antivirus and/or firewall products you have installed.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-18 at 19:46:47ID: 24663524

Proxy Server is not checked.
Windows firewall turned off. I disabled virus program, it is out of date and does update itself anymore.
I do need a 1492 MTU since I use DSL to get on the internet. How do I check that setting in XP Home??

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 19:59:53ID: 24663562

No you don't need any particular size MTU but that size shouldn't be an issue for normal web browsing...

**scratches head**

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 20:02:47ID: 24663574

You can check MTU settings with Doctor TCP: http://www.dslreports.com/drtcp What's the disabled antivirus?  You don't have like, Mcafee Suite or Norton 360 (expired) do you?

by: DatedmanPosted on 2009-06-18 at 20:04:27ID: 24663582

Ah one more thing: try connecting wired to the router and tell the wireless connection to disconnect and see if you have a problem please.

ESET NOD32 v3 expired. Very old system, no built in wired ethernet, only have a wireless card.

by: flubbsterPosted on 2009-06-19 at 04:37:50ID: 24665412

Also make sure that your wireless zero configuration serrvice is started and running. Make sure that startup type is set to automatic. While in services, check that Wired Autoconfig is also running. If stopped, start and set startup to automatic.

to get to services:

start>run>services.msc (enter)

Scan for malware. Browser hijackers are common now days. I recommend MalwareBytes AntiMalware for a general purpose scan/removal tool.  http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 07:48:59ID: 24673947

So far everything recommended I tried and has not fixed the problem. I ran malwarebytes and HIJACKTHIS
which did find a couple of things which I removed, but it did not fix the problem. The fact that
we can ping a web site but not have a browser that works, sounds like we need to focus on
browser related fixes.

Hi Again:

Just logged onto to router and discovered that the router is showing only 4 of the 5 computers
I have on. The one not being shown is the one with the problem. The system with the problem
is assigned 192.168.1.4 but the Netgear router is not listing that IP address. This must mean something
Please advise. All the other system in my home network are listed in the router and are working
fine.

Clarification,  when looking at the "Attached Devices" in the Netgear Wireless Router,
the MAC address for the system is listed but with NO IP Address and Device Name.
So it is sort of there. All the other systems on the home network are showing IP address and
Device Names.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 08:14:54ID: 24674040

Hit refresh a few times and
Now the Wireless Card is being seen by the router with the correct Name and IP address
but still not able to get on the internet. So we seem to be back to the system connecting to
the router, but can only ping website not see them with a browser, ie  IE and Firefox.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 08:25:24ID: 24674085

using cmd window I tried to ping a few more websites, like microsoft, cnn, and ebay
and the only one that does NOT time out is yahoo.com. Why would that be

by: willcompPosted on 2009-06-20 at 08:42:17ID: 24674145

Because most web sites will not accept and return pings. Yahoo is one of the few that will -- both by URL and IP address. Google is another one that accepts pings.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 09:30:38ID: 24674317

So what other things can I try and do to see if I can get a wireless connection going.
I am going to try and dig up an old PCMCIA wired card and see if I can get connected
that way, and report back with results.

Datedman,  Willcomp: Pierellie

thanks for all your help so far.

Wired networking does not work also. Is there someway to go into the registry and
delete all networking related stuff, wired and wireless, and reinstall the drivers, etc
without doing an XP reinstall?  I am familiar with regedit so I just would need to get
the entries involved to  be edited and/or removed.

regards and thanks

Post a HijackThis log.
If you can still ping by URL, network connection and DNS are OK. Neither IE nor Firefox will connect?

You are aware that IE (and possibly Firefox) has no home page set? Have you tried connecting to Yahoo or Google using one of the browsers?

Also, please re-verify that proxy server is not selected. There's a local proxy override listed in HijackThis log.

I gave you directions earlier.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 13:03:27ID: 24674983

Figured it out. Both IE and Firefox Proxy Server settings are disabled.

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 13:09:29ID: 24675006

When I try an make Yahoo or Google the home page, I get a Server not found
on the browser and not a timeout message. Does that mean anything???

HIJACK log showing a local proxy server perhaps that is the source of the problem
for IE and Firefox both have proxy server disabled.

by: willcompPosted on 2009-06-20 at 13:55:42ID: 24675173

I don't think this will matter, but need to be sure.

Run HijackThis and remove this entry:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local

by: danjavaPosted on 2009-06-20 at 15:24:18ID: 24675468

okay, removed entry, still no go.

by: willcompPosted on 2009-06-20 at 15:45:08ID: 24675522

I'm out of ideas. Something is blocking browsers from connecting, but I can't think of anything else to check at present.

You can try running WinsockFix again and see if that helps.
