It's been rebooted after cloning the Mac adress. Actually I've rebooted everything several times. The ISP won't give any information, they said to call Linksys who wants thirty bucks just to say hi!

Browse All TopicsI'm on Optimum Online with a Motorola sbv5222 cable modem. Everything's been worknig fine, but I'm trying to set this up to work with a Linksys WRT54GS. When I plug the cable modem into the internet port of the router, I don't get a LINK light any longer on the cable modem and the internet light on the router doesn't light up. I can access the router through a browser (I've reset it and updated the firmware) but the connection is "Local Only," i.e. no access to the internet. I've checked all the connections, used multiple cables and no luck. This router was working fine on another network--both wired and wireless (I'm trying wired now, but have also tried wireless to no avail.) Help! Running VISTA, btw.

Tried that first. The only reason I tried the mac cloning was from automated Linksys directions. I really don't think that has anything to do with it though. Even if I don't have a computer hooked to the router and the only connection is from the cable modem to the router I get no link on the cable modem and no Internet light on the router. If hooked direct from the modem to the pc everythings fine.
So your Cloned MAC is the same as your PC? I'll assume yes. Have you turned both modem and Router off at same time? Restart them Router first then Modem. See if that helps at all. Make sure your modem if off long enough to loose its memory. Not much else I can tell you from there.. Sorry and good luck
The modem and router might be trying to use the same IP address range if both are using DHCP.
Say the router 'Obtains' an addy of 192.168.1.1 from the modem, it can't then turn around and hand out the same addy to the lan.
While just connected to the modem (with computer), get the IP for the computer. Then go into the router and see if that is what it is trying to use for it DHCP range.
Sorry, I didn't put that very well. It's late and I'm tired. : /
Go into the router setup > DHCP Server page, and see what it is using and what you can change the range to, to get it away from the modem.
You can also turn off the DHCP Server in one of them (router is usually less messy, and just use it as a switch/access point)
A note on the internet said to leave both router and cable modem off for five minutes, then power up the cable modem, wait another five minutes, then the router. I had a linksys wireless router for a while, but it wouldn't ever 'sync' with the modem. If you can wait, it might sync eventually. I changed routers.
Well, you won't want to clone your PC's MAC to the Internet port on the linksys router and still expect to use that PC on that router. You will have duplicate MACs in the MAC table on the router and this will not work. So, remove the cloned MAC first and reboot the router. Next, try to connect you PC to the cable modem. Power off the modem for 45 seconds and power it back on. Make sure you have vista Firewall turned on. Can you get to the Internet?
No: See what IP address the ISP has given you and report back.
Yes: Now, disconnect the PC for the modem and connect the Internet port on the router to the cable modem and power cycle for 45 seconds again. Do you get a link light on the router? Login to the router. Did the ISP give you an IP address? If no, make sure it is set for DHCP on the Internet port.
Note: If still a no-go, try replacing the router. It is possible that the router is dead, even though it was working just a short time ago.
Well--I've just given up on this one. From what I can tell, this is a problem that Optimum Online is causing, and they don't seem to want to help--they flat out tell you they won't provide any networking support. I bought a new router and still had problems. I also took the old router and put it back onto another network and it worked fine. I'll try again sometime in the future. Thanks for all the suggestions.

You may have to Reboot your Modem to get it to identify teh New Routers MAC number, or call you ISP for help as well.
