Question

Linksys RV082 router problems

Asked by: hhenderson

I have a pair of RV082 routers. I have set up the VPN tunnel and the tunnel says they are connected. The routers can ping each other. The problem is that I cannot ping or access anything behind the router from the remote location. I have contacted linksys tech support and they verified that my settings are correct and should be working. At their suggestion i did a port probe using sheilds up and found that ports 500 and 4500 are closed. They said these are necessary for the VPN to work correctly. I contacted my ISP (ATT) and they said they are not blocking any ports. The domain controller is a Windows 2003 server. Any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Hi hhenderson,

Can you be more specific on your VPN setup?
What is setup as local & remote security group (did you choose IP-range, subnet or anything else and what exactly)? Do you have any additional subnets which need to be covered on any end of the VPN connection?

Regards,

LucF

Local Group Setup

Local security gateway type is IP Only
IP address is the Wan IP address provided by my ISP
Local Security Group Type is Subnet
IP address is 192.168.0.0 (this routers Lan IP address is 192.168.0.1)
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

Remote Group Setup

Remote security gateway type is IP Only
IP address is the Wan IP of the remote router provided by my ISP
Remote Security Group Type is Subnet
IP address is 192.168.200.0 (this routers Lan IP address is 192.168.200.6)
Subnet mask is 255.255.255.0

I don't have any additional subnets that need to be covered. Just these two. I appreciate the help.

Hi hhenderson,

Those settings look fine to me. I'm assuming on the other router the remote and local security groups are exactly the opposite? Simple mistakes could make all the difference with these RV082's.

You mentioned the routers say they're connected and you can ping each other.
Can you check Setup => more => Advanced routing => Show routing table if a route is created there for traffic having to cross the VPN connection?
Also, I've seen some issues before on these routers with Netbios broadcast, so when testing the connection can you try to do so by IP instead of hostname?

Regards,

LucF

Oh, just thought of one last thing. Some previous firmware versions had trouble with the routers IP not ending at .1. So, what firmware are you running and did you try updating it to the latest one yet?

I have set up a static route under the advanced routing to try and force traffic. Did not make a difference. I have been testing with IP address.

Firmware on both routers is 2.0.0.19-tm

Hi hhenderson,

You shouldn't be using static routes in your setup, the RV082's should be able to handle it without needing to resort to it. (Working mode: Gateway, RIP: Disabled and delete static routes which have been setup)

Can you post the VPN log and routing table here (just edit out the public IP addresses) as at this moment all seems to be setup fine appart from the static routing.

Regards,

LucF

I have removed the static routes. working mode is gateway on both. RIP is disabled on both. Static routes deleted. Still have the same problem. I will post the logs when i get a chance. Thanks.
