Thanks for laying this out so simply. I will try later and report my findings. I think part of the problem is that I kept connecting the netgear to the d-link via a port on the modem to the 'internet' part of the d-link and then changing the ip to something like 192.168.0.3.
If, in the end I need to do port forwarding, which of these configurations would be best, the first option or the second?

the dsl on the netgear is pppoe ;
---------- -------
what you can do is : just connect a cable from your netgear lan port to a lan port on your dlink and disable the dhcp server on your dlink as there shud be a dhcp already on netgear.
on your dlink you can setup your wireless network as per your liking.
for the above to work : make sure both of them are on the same subnet i.e. if the netgear ip address is 192.168.0.1 , the dlink ip can be 192.168.0.2 or anything but not 192.168.0.1
--------------------------
the second option :
connect a cable from netgear ethernet port to dlink wan port
change the dlink lan settings to a different subnet for e.g. 192.168.20.1 ;
under dlink wan settings select dynamic ip from dhcp (as dhcp should be running on netgear)
turn on dhcp under lan settings on your dlink as well
it will work.
basically experts have already explained , i am just trying to re-phrase.
hope this helps
i have posted on your other question as well - you can provide screen shots of the configuration screens from your :
