network switch and router

this is probably a dumb question but is there a   internet port on a switch where the internet cable should be giong into?   Is it like a router where you have a specific port when you put in ethernet cable to wan or internert port

It depends on the switch. Newer switched are autosensing and it does not matter. An older switch will be marked - usually two ports together with one marked uplink. Use one of those for internet input and do not use the other port. Use the remaining ports for output. ... THinkpads_User

no it does not matter.  all ports are the same one a switch.  the mac of the device that is your wan device (router, etc.) will be picked up by the switch on that port... no different than a the PCs and other switches on your other ports.  the switch just switches traffic to and from those macs... hence, a switch... doesn't matter.
