Question

Weird entry in routing table

Asked by: every1isevil2

I am working on configuring a small lab environment and I am seeing a entry in the routing table that does not make sense.  I have followed the guideline for the lab set up to the T, and their samples show the exact same output EXCEPT for this one line:

C       10.1.100.2/32 is directly connected, Serial0/0

I understand WHAT the implications are of this in the routing table BUT why does it show up?  Is it because I am running a newer IOS?

Gateway of last resort is not set
10.0.0.0/8 is variably subnetted, 4 subnets, 2 masks
C 10.1.1.0/24 is directly connected, Loopback1
C 10.1.100.2/32 is directly connected, Serial0/0
C 10.1.100.0/24 is directly connected, Serial0/0
C 10.1.200.0/24 is directly connected, FastEthernet0/0

Is 10.1.100.2 the far end of the serial connection?

by: every1isevil2Posted on 2009-11-07 at 16:41:26ID: 25768846

Yes it is.

by: every1isevil2Posted on 2009-11-07 at 18:40:50ID: 25769209

The official name for this is "host route" but I am trying to figure out WHY it is there.  It is definitely not hurting anything  but why does it show up?

by: benhansonPosted on 2009-11-08 at 00:55:32ID: 25769854

I'm guessing it is the 'ip ospf network point-to-point' that causes it to show up.  I've had plenty of serial connections on OSPF enabled routers, and I've never seen that(also never used 'ip ospf network point-to-point')

These entries show up on Cisco (and some other vendors) routers when using PPP encapsulation. I looked into it years ago and discovered why but have since forgotten as it was irrelevant.

Suffice it to say that it's a function of how Cisco has implemented PPP on their routers.

This is default behaviour as  designed for PPP IPCP for dynamic address allocation (e.g dialup access system) although not useful in this case.

to disable this behaviour do :

int s0/0
no peer neighbor-route

Remeber to bounce the interface after this configuration

by: rochey2009Posted on 2009-11-10 at 13:09:22ID: 25789884

The Cisco IOS software automatically creates neighbor routes by default; that is, it automatically sets up a route to the peer address on a point-to-point interface when the PPP IPCP negotiation is completed.

To disable this default behavior or to reenable it once it has been disabled, use the following commands in interface configuration mode:

no peer neighbor-route
