Question

Wireless Access with Cisco 877W Wireless Router

Asked by: cpatte7372

Hi Experts,

Hope you're all well.

I've recently purchased a Cisco Wireless 877W.
Does anyone have any simple configurations to assist me to get it working? Currently, I'm using netgear.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

Welcome to the world of Cisco!

Of course, trying to configure a new Cisco router from scratch can be slightly daunting at first.  But, once you get used to the configuration, can be relatively simple to maintain and configure.

I would suggest starting with the following Quick Guide link to get the 877W up and running.

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/800/850/software/configuration/guide/857sg_bk.pdf

Additionally, you might need to consult your ISP for additional information on integrating the router with your ADSL line.  They might even have an additional walkthrough available for their network specifics.

Hope this helps - and good luck!

Mike

Thanks for getting back to me.
Just a few questions (quite emabarrassing).

In the sample config below, can someone tell me where I would get the hostname from? Can I use the IP address of the computer that I trying to connect from?

Also, I'm currently using netgear and whenever I use netgear to access the internet I'm never asked for my ADSL LOGIN PASSWORD. However, when configuring the dialer interface I have to input my 'chap password'. Don't understand why I need to include the chap password when configuring the cisco 877W, see below. Any suggestions?

Hi ikalmar

OK, I no longer get authentication errors. I'm very close to accessing the internet with the new 877W. Can you or anyone able to help take a look at my configs and let me know if I'm missing anything?

HI,

This line not need:

ip nat pool pool1 192.168.0.1 192.168.0.20 netmask 255.255.255.0

by: ikalmarPosted on 2009-11-09 at 03:49:56ID: 25775009

I advise the following:

int range fast 0 - 3
 spanning-tree portfast
 switchport access vlan 2

by: cpatte7372Posted on 2009-11-09 at 03:57:55ID: 25775059

ikalmar

Thanks but I don't think I need :

int range fast 0 - 3
 spanning-tree portfast
 switchport access vlan 2

I don't want to access through the lan. I would like to access internet via wireless.

Any other suggestions?

Cheers

Hi all,

I think I've just figured out why I can access the router wirelessly but not the internet.
Basically, its because my ISP is SKY and they won't provide its customers with authentication and password details. In additon, the only routers that will work with their ADSL connection is netgear.
This is sad news as I've just forked out £220 on a cisco 877W!

Still would like hear any of your comments

Cheers

by: fz2hqsPosted on 2009-12-20 at 11:06:28ID: 26091856

Depends what Router SKy gave you, but try the following with the sky box plugged in:

1) Launch a web browser, it doesnt matter if the router is not connected to the ADSL line, if not connected you will see a page not found error, thats expected and normal.

2) Next, in the address bar cutn'past or click on this link:

http://192.168.0.1/setup.cgi?todo=ping_test&c4_IPAddr=%26%2Fbin%2Fbusybox%20grep%20ppoa_%20%2Ftmp%2Fnvram%20%3E%20%2Fwww%2Fnetgear.cfg

(If prompted for a router username and and password then username -= admin password = sky)

Next you should see a white screen with just one of text something like

Usage: ping [OPTION]& host

4) Wait about 10 seconds and cutn'paste or click this link

http://192.168.0.1/netgear.cfg

5) This will save a text file called netgear.cfg wherever your default location for saving documents is. You should then able to open netgear.cfg with a text editor such as Notepad on a PC or Textedit on a Mac. I d suggest you re-save it with a different name as netgear.cfg is also used for router settings backups.

The text file should look something like :

pppoa_username: YOURUSERNAME@skydsl
pppoa_password: YOURPASSWORD
pppoa_idle=0
pppoa_ipaddr=

Armed with this info you may now use any router you wish so if your Sky router packs up at least you have a fallback. Should you need to actually log into the router to change the WiFi settings, set-up port forwarding, dynamic naming service etc. the default logon is admin and the password sky

Its very doable - I may have already done the same thing.... there are all sorts of issues in regards support with Sky after you do this
