here is the setup, we have a cisco based LAN modeled on cisco methods. 3 core nodes triangulated with 2Gb ether channels, the core is running eigrp. Each core node is located in a sepraite building. Each building has its own set of VLANs local only to that building, so in effect we have a client vlan in each building, guest, voice.. ect..! We have a metro VLAN that runs in between to carry the routed traffic.
We are moving to brand new 40mb MPLS for our WAN connectivity to branch offices, we have two routers running HSPR and the NTE will be located in building 1 for router 1 and building 2 for router 2.
Here is my issue, I do not want to run a layer 2 vlan accross my core, which is what i need to do in order to get the standby address's working...
building 1
active - 192.168.253.1 VLAN 253
standby - 192.168.254.2 VLAN 254
buinding 2
active - 192.168.253.2 VLAN 253
standby - 192.168.254.1 VLAN 254
What options do I have open to me in order to run HSRP accross the core without spanning layer 2

Why do you need HSRP at all? Your core is routed correct ? I assume the 2BG etherchannels are Layer 3 etherchannels? Your users will layer 2 up to the building 6500 then layer 3 to the exit point, internet?
The new mpls service, is the service a layer 3 VPN? You should be able to advertise your exit points via eigrp and let routing do its thing, why worry about HSRP at all?
