The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

More VLAN config help (Cisco Catalyst)

Asked by lunanat in Network Switches & Hubs

Heheh, so I opened up a question a few days ago regarding a new VLAN environment that we're switching to.. that question was answered so well that I think I'm going to ask another (since I can't seem to figure it out).

I have a production LAN (mostly unmanaged) connected to a "test" LAN via a little store-bought 10/100 switch.

The test LAN consists of (currently) 1 core switch (catalyst 3560G layer 2/3/4) and 1 edge switch (catalyst 2960G layer 2).

I have a laptop as well, that I am using to simulate devices.

Due to the help of the previous question, when I plug the laptop into my core switch and set that port as access (and give it the right vlan) the DHCP gives it an IP address instantly.  I am also able to ping several production servers from the core switch.

However, when I set the port to trunk and plug my edge switch into it (setting the edge port to trunk as well) and plug my laptop into the edge switch (setting the laptop's port to access and giving it the right vlan), I am no longer able to get a DHCP address.  From the switch I am able to ping without changing the source, however if I try to ping with the source being the vlan, I get
"% Invalid source interface - IP not enabled or interface is down"

I think I -might- know the answer to this question, so I'll just ask.

Do I need to have an ip address for each VLAN on each switch that it resides on?  Is there any way that I can use my layer 3 switch for all routing?
