Yasir, I see that it still works with the 3560 with encap dot1q and the 4506 with just switchport mode trunk. shouldn't it not work because of an encapsulation mismatch?

No switchport trunk encap dot1q on WS-X45-SUP6-E
Hi experts,
I'm trying to trunk a 3560 to a 4506 with sup WS-X45-SUP6-E. On the 3560 I can set the trunk encapsulation type, but on the 4506 side I don't have that option. It just lets me set the switchport mode trunk. When I hit switchpor trunk ?, I get:
allowed Set allowed VLAN characteristics when interface is in trunking mode
native Set trunking native characteristics when interface is in trunking
mode
pruning Set pruning VLAN characteristics when interface is in trunking mode

Yes the Cisco 4506 won't allow you to configure the encapsulation mode
Just use the following command for the interface you want to be in trunk mode
switchport mode trunk
