2x gs724t just installed... Getting major network loss

Hey All,

Visited a site.

Not familiar with these 'smart switches'

I installed them and set local IP's on both units.. Not configured anything else

Internal databases have been crashing and Internet has been virtually non existent (ADSL).

Complained to ISP and they advised line has been solid for a significant amount of time.

Been checking internaly and pinging and ping is being changed to <1 ms to 10-20ms and then destination host unreachable.

Can anyone advise if more has to happen on these switches.. QoS or something other..

Many thanks in advance as I need a quick answer on this.

Thanks

R

Also web guy is saying.
when he does uploads on FTP.... surfing is intermittent .. but bugs out with anything of any size is being uploaded .. after time then it bugs out.
Problem its database and ftp etc.... those type of services.
Thanks

hi!
actually, I would suggest cabling problem to check first.
are you sure, that there are no loops between two switches?
default config should work unless you have any redundant links

Well. Replaced 2x lesser 10/100MB switches. They worked fine... Have not been experiencing any of the problems that we are now.
Loops.. ???
I have switch 1 serving main network
switch 2 is connected to switch 1 with other devices like printers etc.. and a lesser network.
Just cabled between the 2x.. There didnt appear to be any special uplink ports.... so just port 2
24 to 24.

Thanks

doing in 10 mins now due to no physical access

I suppose green is going to the switch, not to the HUB.
otherwise you can run into troubles with hubs and low-cost aggregation units... due to collisions

Upgrade has taken on both units.... allowing users to use over afternoon.
Green was port 1 on Switch 1 where all the clients were then to standard Dell powerconnect 2116 to VOIPS.
I have changed so that DELL POWERCONNECT is in switch 2.
So switch 1 has only servers and clients.
Any issues with this... or should I be putting anything else in place or any speical changes...
ALSO,
What is best way to test this rather than a ping.
Thanks in advance.

R

ping should work normally.
most of the monitoring tools are based on ping, if you are testing availability of a physical device.
I would suggest enabling spanning tree on all three switches...

I dont really understand your hub switch comment.. Sorry can you explain.
Port 1 of switch 2 (not connected yet) will go to port 1 of Dell PowerConnect
R

hub and switch are different network devices, switches works in fullduplex, hub - in half duplex hence can't deal with collisions....

ok, yeah I follow that.
So are you saying this site cannot run a Netgear gs724t with a dell powerconnect 2216
2216 has 16x 10/100 ports. so its a switch.
No special uplink ports or anything.
so netgear port 1 to dell powerconnect port1..... do I need to do anything special.

Will it have any effect to the layout I have.
R
in some cases - yes, please, check that you don't have HUBs, but switches...

SO if I have no hubs...as I have not..
Will the above work .. is it correct or not

Can I improve on the setup I have at all with what I have... i.e. is their a better approach

R
your setup is ok
so how your network is going now? any packet loss?

I am getting spikes of MS on main server upto 20ms ... about 10ms to 20ms. every so often.. I have had a database crash 4x times for one user. However other users have not reported any issues of that nature.
However Internet has still been up and down and web guys could not FTP.
I have just changed some settings on the Vigor regarding failover .. but only just.
Thanks for your help.
I will report back with findings tomorrow / Monday

Interesting as yours is similar to mine
Any resolution yet.

possibly requesting a reseller to help....

That could be an option,
But having a basic understanding of switching and the user manual should be all you need in an SME environment.
I take your point onboard but feel this should be solvable with EE and user manual....
Or if not solvable bc it obviously does not do what its meant too and thats proven.. then classed as bad units
Any other ideas anyone
Thanks in advance

Still no answer and Netgear say their only answer is bad NIC .. and NO NIC's can be 10/100 they must all be Gigabit..
The whole network bar servers is on 10/100 and the rest are absolutely fine.
I feel Netgear and Seller have really messed about on this issue.
Network comes first so I have to place the 2x pc's having an issue on a 10/100 Dumb switch.
All is fine..
I will award points as peeps have been helpful and as much as I have done exactly what has been asked prior and during.
I still think your advice has been sound.
So here you go. Sorry for the late close.
