The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

configuring old switches (still working and in use) to be part of the newer ip sub-network and be able to connect and monitor them.

Asked by egiblock in Network Switches & Hubs

Tags: catalyst switches, subnetting, management

we have a mix of newer cisco switches in our network, and a batch of older switches in the network.

the old switches are mainly for routing old wiring in the building, and some provide fiber channels to other locations.

the newer switches handle all of the PoE phones as well as routing.

the old ones were never removed because at that time, budget and time were minimal.  so it was basically put in and get it working.

---------------------

i am in the process of getting all of the switches on the same subnetwork for monitoring and maintenance.

using the Cisco Network Assistant, i can map out all of the routers and switches in the network. (except for a majority of the old ones).

over the past week i went to every old switch (about 10 now), used the console to change all of the passwords (enable and telnet) to the same thing.

I had configuration for each one ready to go, and applied it to them, but i can't "see" them with CDP, but can't connect to them for management.

Example Below:
-------------------
My PC = 10.10.8.20

Router = (10.10.8.1, 10.1.1.1)

newSwitch7 = 10.1.1.7

oldSwitch19 = 10.1.1.19

CDP tells me the link is up / working, but i can't connect to it to manage the switch..
snapshots of the configs are below.  if you need to know anything else, just ask:

newSwitch7 (Command was:  show cdp neighbors detail)
