how do i connect 2 switches through a fiber cable?

i have 2 cisco switches ( 4510 and 2024) and i want to connect them through a fiber cable, on the 4510 i am running RIP version 1, i connected the fiber and the 2 interfaces came up and i created vlan100 , the config on the 4510 as follows:

interface GigabitEthernet6/1
switchport access vlan 100
logging event link-status
load-interval 30

interface Vlan100
ip address 10.20.70.1 255.255.255.0

it did not work anything can be done?
