Question

IBM BROCADE 2498 24E

Asked by: DOCDGA

We have four IBM servers with one HBA per server. We have one DS3400 SAN with two HBA's and one 2498 Brocade FS.

We have configured an alias for each WWN involved. In the default zone we have included all the ports in the port group, All the WWN's of the devices connected to the switch, and an alias for each device(WWN) that is connected to the switch.

The default zone is in the default config and the the config has been saved and enabled.

We are using IBM System Storage DS Storage Manager 10. Auto Discovery finds the DS3400. When we go to configure Hosts are not found automatically or manually.

We have never fully configured a Brocade switch for a SAN before and we can't figure out why Storage Manager can't pick up these hosts. We have gone through the available documentation on configuring this switch without success.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It's best to configure the switch one way or the other - hard zoning or soft zoning, not both. I recommend soft zoning, but hard zoning is simplest to manage.

To set up the switch for soft zoning:
Create aliases (done!)
Create zones with the aliases. SAN best practices require single-initiator zoning, so *one* host WWN connecting to one or multiple DS3400 WWNs
Add teh zones to a configuration, save and enable the config. Done!

We did this. We created aliases for the two SAN HBA's, and one host. We added these aliases and the three swithch HBA's associated to a new Zone. We then saved and enabled the new Zone on the switch. But the Storage Manager still doesn't see the host. Any suggestions ?

The default config for the switch is to have all ports in one zone. The moment you create a new config, this behaviour is disabled - which probably accounts for what you're seeing. Either choose soft zoning (by WWN/aliases) OR hard zoning (by port) - not both. I'd recommend you use soft zoning as this generally gives you a more robust SAN although this takes more setting up.

Sorry I took so long to get back on this.

If you are doing hard zoning you have to do it in 3 areas.

You should Alias all WWNs. Then on the Zone tab hook the Aliases to a Zone.

Then on the Zone Config tab you need to hook the Named Zones in as Zone Config Member.
