Question

Graceful Shutdown of a Cisco 3560 G switch

Asked by: tc100years

I need to power down an entire rack connected to one UPS.  This includes 2 Cisco Catalyst 3560 G switches.  The don't have any apparant physical power switch nor do I see any graceful shutdown option through the web gui.

What is the Cisco supported best practice for shutting down thier switch equipment like the catalyst 3560 G?  Is there a command to issue from a hypterminal telnet session to gracefully shut the device down and if so, how is it powered back on?

I might be overthinking this but my organization has a strong emphasis on employing best practices so I'm looking for the recommended/best practices from any Cisco Smart experts...

There is no graceful shutdown or any need to as there are no spinning hard drives, etc...

You can simply pull the plug.  I would "wr mem" or "copy run start" to save the changes before powering off however in case it was forgotten at some point.

Yeah there is no "shutdown" command.

Best practice is to save your config with "copy run start" or "wr mem" (both do the same thing) then pull the power cable. Thats it.

If you really want to make sure your config is safe then you can save a copy to your local computer or a tftp server. The webGUI (SDM) has an option to save your config. I beleive its under the file menu.

Perfect, that makes sense and confirms what I suspected based on what I've found online.

Thanks for the confirmation...one follow up, if the config is saved after every change, would you see a reason to save the config again before power down as an additional precaution or would you just rely on your archived config from the last change?

No, there wouldn't be a need at that point but it's always good to be safe.

By the way, did you mistakenly accept the wrong answer or mean to split points?  that1guy15 pretty much just reiterated what I had just said.
