Create VLANs on Netgear FS728TP

We have recently purchased a couple of Netgear PoE switches (FS728TP). These will be used on our VOIP network 192.168.x.x.  We would like to create VLANs to be able to host our data network 172.x.x.x as well.
I would like to have first 20 ports for the 172.x.x.x network and the the last ports for the 192.x.x.x.
I have follwed the instructions on the manual but i am not able to get onto the 172.x.x.x.
Is there something I am missing?
Please help. thanks

VLAN 10    172 network
first 5 ports  tagged
PVID -first 5 ports

VLAN 1(default)  192  network
Last 14 untagged
PVID- last 14

I am able to manage it through the 192.
How do I get VLAN 10 to recognize the 172 network?

Do I need to enter some settings for that vlan?
if so, where do I do that.
ah, think i might understand your query now.

Firstly, assuming that systems on the 192 (vlan1) network can see each other fine?

Secondly, conect a PC to the 172 (vlan 10) network and give it an IP on that subnet. see if that works OK and can see other 172 subnet items OK.

assuming that both of these are OK, is your question asking why you cannot see one from the other?
If so, VLANs are designed to separate networks. thats what it is meant to do.
Any traffic meant for a subnet outside of your subnet mask is sent to your default gateway. that handles traffic for other subnets and is where you need to make your changes.

Depending on your config, you need a link between both subnets (vlans) which your default gateways are aware of (static route)

I finally call Netgear Support and this is what I found out.
This type of switch can only be configured to be an extension of an existing vlan and not able to create a stand alone VLAN.

I currently have an HP Procurve 2626 and a Netgear FS728TP.

on the HP I had an existing VLan
VLAN 3
you must TAG the port that is going to connect to the Netgear.   Port 10

On the Netgear
I followed the instructions on the pdf that I  added.
when you create a VLan it must be identical to an existing VLan.
Example: VLAN 3
Ports:   1-8
PVID:    VLAN 3
you must the TAG the port that is connecting to the HP switch.  Port 4
you must UNTAG the remaining ports for the computers that will be connecting
then you are able to plug in and communicate on the network.

So basically, if you somehow run out of ports on your other VLAN switch this Netgear switch can come in handy otherwise it is just a regular PoE switch.
