Question

802.11 b.g wifi channel usage / speed relation

Asked by: joopv

It is common knowledge that - because of overlap - one can only use 3 channels simultaneously in 802.11b/g wifi networks. ( 1 / 6 / 11 )

However - just suppose we limit the speed to 1Mbit on the radio modulation interface, as the 802.11b/g standard allows.  Shannon dictates that the nessecary bandwidth would decrease also.

Would this also mean that the number of simultaneously usable channels would increase?

I can's seem to find a relation between the radio speed / modulation scheme and actually needed or consumed bandwidth.

A small addendum on my own posting:
I realize the the receiver RF front-end or IF bandwidth is probably fixed on the highest speed / widest channel usage, and probably won't be adjusted when using lower wifi speeds.

There is no corelation between the modulation scheme and radio speed. The "rule" of 1/6/11 comes from overlapping channels, which is the modulation scheme. Bandwidth refers to how much data is sent over the link. Not how much power output it has. There is a corelation between power usage of a link and interference on a channel.

In a large room, auditorium - non-repeating,  I have set up access points in all four corners. In opposite corners I have two APs on channel six with the power turned down to about 40%. In the other two corners I have them on channels 1 & 11, both on max power. This allows for total coverage of the room. The power and channels have no effect on bandwidth however. The number of simultaneous users do.

I hope I have helped you.

Thanks for your response.  Maybe my question was not clear enough.

The question is:

Would the forced use of (for example) 1Mbit/sec radio speed (as can be configured on more WiFi advanced access points like Cisco) result in the possibility to use more channels simultaneously?

by: OutlawSystemsPosted on 2008-04-21 at 07:51:52ID: 21402446

No. The limitation of bandwidth does nothing for channel usage. Only power output can decrease the modulation overlap.

Thanks for your responses.
I'm still looking for a reference.  If i only had a good spectrum analyzer i could make an actual measurement of wifi signals at various speeds.
