Browse All TopicsI have a new HP G6062EA with Vista preinstalled and I want to replace it with XP or add XP. I have read the various pieces about dual booting, including using the Vista DVD to repair the missing bootloader after installing XP, but there are suggestions this does not work. First question is, should I be able to dual boot using EasyBCD and following the acpmag article or am I better just ditching Vista and using XP? The second question, which is more significant, concerns the drivers. I have installed XP onto a new partition but have a number of missing drivers. These include the coprocessor, Ethernet controller (2), PCI device, SMS bus controller, video controller and the network adapter. Consequently, I cannot get on line on the laptop to download drivers, but in any case would not know where to look. HP only include driver updates for my model of laptop and these are for Vista. Where can I find the required XP drivers or is it possible the components used by HP only have Vista drivers?

I'm a big fan of driveragent.com as it is an excellent resource to get a good view of what hardware you have when Windows will only say "Ethernet Controller" or "Unknown Device".
If you pay for a subscription you can then usually download *most* of what you need. Running the scan is totally free and will usually indentify all the hardware whether windows found drivers or not.
HP's site is sometimes good to at least figure out what hardware you have when you're trying to find alternate drivers. Once you can identify the hardware usually you can get drivers from Intel or VIA or nVidia.
I have made some progress with downloading the G6065EA drivers. Audio and video are resolved, but I am still having problems with the drivers for Ethernet Controller (x2), Modem device on HD Audio Bus and SM Bus Controller.
HP certainly don't encourage downgrading from Vista to XP and do not appear to list any XP drivers for the G6062EA.
Also, I still do not have a Network Adapter, so cannot access the internet to try driveragent.com.
I have used driveragent.com before on a previous computer but was disappointed to get drivers recommended that were not appropriate for my PC. Some of the drivers screwed up my system and I had the devil's own job to get rid of them.
I will have another go at getting the hardware details from HP but they appear to be obstructive when it comes to downgrading to XP.
If it's an athelos try http://www.atheros.cz/ to find a driver that's at least close to what you need. According to that page the 5007 itself doesn't have XP support but the 5007G does and it might be close enough to work.
If it's a Broadcom there are plenty of XP drivers on Dell's website that might fit the bill. It's just a matter of trial and error unless you can isolate the exact chipset you need drivers for.
Typically I create restore points before attempting to install drivers I'm unsure of. I also try to avoid running the installer, instead I manually unpack the drivers with something like winrar and install drivers directly using device manager. Saves a lot of time in the long run to get unneeded software out.
This is something I've done in the past that has helped isolate what I'm looking for -
in device manager right click on the device you need drivers for -> properties -> Details : copy/paste the Device Instance ID to Google (or on another machine if it's network you can't access) and see what comes up - you'd be surprised at how many sources for drivers there are. If you don't get anything at first cut back on the string so you're not looking for specific builds. Often other drivers in the same class will work for the chipset.

The information provided above did get me to all the necessary information but it took me about two weeks to get to a fully functioning XP system. You have got to have access to another computer with internet access and need to start with the Atheros driver. I downloaded the networking drivers to an external harddrive and loaded from there.
Once the laptop is online, Driveragent did the business as far as finding the other relevant divers was concerned but be aware that some of the drivers may not be right.
I made sure I made an image copy of my laptop each time I installed a driver and this enabled me to get over the problem that one of the drivers (it was one of the nVidia drivers - I do not recall whether it was the PCI or SMS) completely stopped Windows from loading. I used Paragon and reloaded an image backup and went on to the next driver.
Good luck - I was pleased to get my laptop working problem-free with XP.
