Browse All TopicsHello there,
This question is in general:
Is there a way you can reduce the wireless operating range from an access point?
For example I am able to connect to my wireless access point from 30meters far, and I want to reduce it to 15meters let say.
Is that achievable with access points in general ? If so can you please provide a guide of where would I need to go to the configuration ?
I have the following models from Dlink: dap1522, Dir-655, and Dwl-3500ap.
Greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure how the config pages on your router look like. But there is usually an option to reduce the broadcasting power of the device. However, people could still pick up the signal using modified antennas/receivers and what not.
If you only have a few devices which are supposed to connect to the WAP, then you could either:
1.) Set up static addressing
2.) Set up a filter for DHCP which would only allow clients with the appropriate MAC addresses.
If there are certain individuals/devices which keep on accessing the system in an unauthorized manner:
1.) Make sure you have encrypted the connection (Use WPA2 and NOT WEP)
2.) Set up a filter in DHCP which blocks specific clients (you can get their MAC addresses from the router logs)
Hope that helps.
