You can get either a USB or PCI wireless adaptor- USB would probably be easiest. Below are a couple options at different price points.
High End:
Dlink router and USB adaptor
Affordable:

There are of course other brands and you could go cheaper, but those will do what you want at a decent speed.
Please define the context of "fastest" - do you mean the fastest way to get connected, or the way that will be fastest after you're connected?
For the former, a wireless card/router; for the latter, running a network cable from the router to the desktop will give you the fastest speeds.
For D-Link you might want to look on the http://www.dlink-me.com/ site, since they should have products listed that are available for your area (going by your time zone setting). Products from the dlinkshop.com site will be restricted to the channels available in the USA, which are only slightly-more restrictive in the 802.11g/n band, but are very different in the 802.11a/n band.
What router (brand/model) do you have now, by the way?

Any wifi router that's wireless n (802.11n) will be the fastest, but only if your laptop has a compatible wireless card.
