Question

Linksys WRT54GC and WAP54G in AP Client mode?

Asked by: potworny

Heeeeeeelp :)

I have two Linksys gadgets...
One is a WRT54GC router - fine and small piece of hardware
Another one is an Linksys WAP54G Access Point.

I would like to connect these two so there is a wireless connection between them. This way I will be able to connect my printer over RJ45 on the AP.

But there is a little trouble.

Although the AP sees the WiFi network it does not connect and the MAC address of the router is written in red. I have checked the manual but it suggests buying another AP! But the suggested config is with a wired router not a WiFi one as I do already own.

There is light in the tunnel:
http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Access_Points&message.id=2976&query.id=155528

So I now know it is possible.

Can anyone help?

My router IP is 192.168.2.1
My AP IP: 192.168.2.245, 255.255.255.0, 192.168.2.1

Sincerely,
The Terrible Johnny

Make sure you arent using WPA.... Dont think this bridge mode supports anything higher than WEP.....

Least it didnt when I used to haev this same exact setup, with a WRT54G.....

by: johnb6767Posted on 2008-02-20 at 13:39:50ID: 20942254

And the WAP54G should only have 1 port (if memory serves me...), so it would need to be uplinked to a small switch.....

Have you tried putting the router and access point in bridging mode?  That should do it but they wont play with others.  I would try that first to make sure they will work together.  After that we can see if we can get them to play with your other devices.

I know, I know that is a stupid question that follows:

What do I do here (there are FOUR fields):
Wireless Bridge  Remote Wireless Bridge's LAN MAC Address:
_____________ _____________ _____________ ________________

Do i put the MAC address of my Router in the first field?

Hello potworny,

Before your question gets closed, I'd like to mention the following, not trying to be a pain in the a**, but did you check the userinterface of your WAP54G?

To Quote:
"Note: When set to "AP Client" and "Wireless Bridge" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G). When set to"Wireless Repeater" mode, this device will only communicate with another Linksys Access Point (WAP54G) and Linksys Wireless-G Router (WRT54G)."

Which shows that the setup you want to be using isn't possible at all. AP client is only to be used with another WAP54G, not with a WRT54GC or any other router.

Regards,

Luc

I know that LucF :) That is why I posted the link with the "proof" that somebody has managed to connect these two Linksys Disasters together.

I will NEVER buy a single piece of linksys again. not in my life :]

by: LucFPosted on 2008-02-21 at 16:08:04ID: 20953413

Hi potworny,

The link you showed only mentions one person who had it working. No version numbers of the WRT54GC or WAP54G were mentioned, neither were firmware versions so it's rather useless to guess what the used setup was, there are four different versions of the WAP54G and two versions of the WRT54GC let alone the amount of different firmware versions.
The screenshot I posted was to show you that Linksys does not support this setup and so what you've attempted to do was kind of a try without a future. You can call it "Linksys Disasters", I'd rather call it a "setup problem found by trial-and-error" as you're trying to use a device in a way it was not intended by Linksys to operate.

Regards,

LucF

I think that this case is closed. You are obviously right.

I wish I remember how I did this for you.....

I had the WRT54G in the front of the apartment, and linked it Wirelessly to the WAP54G, in teh back, which was linked to a switch....

It is possible to do that.

More than positive the Wireless Repeater Mode is what you wanted, if what I described in my scenario is what you are trying to accomplish....

Sorry, my Internet was down last night, so I couldnt respond sooner.........

i managed to use WAP54g as AP client to my Cisco Aironet 350 wireless bridge :), haven't tested the stability yet though, I just bought it yesterday.

And I'm planning to use external antennas to connect 2 builidings with them, wish me luck guys.
