Question

Converting Cisco Aironet 1130AG from Lightweight to Autonomous mode

Asked by: MACROLEVEL

Hello!

Probably a year ago I got brand new Cisco Aironet 1130AG (AIR-LAP1131AG-A-K9) along with ASA5505. I was able to set ASA for my small network, but I found that Aironet AP is not compatible with ASA because it is loaded with Lightweight Access Point Protocol image. I did some research and I am pretty sure that this AP can be converted to regular AP which will operate as Autonomous Access Point.

The problem is that I don't know how and all the information I found online is too complicated or inapplicable.

AP is powered on via power adapter. I can't open web-based utility using this IP address and I cannot connect to AP using Telnet via serial port (the message is something like LWAPP_CLIENT_ERROR: lwapp_name_lookup - Could not resolve CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER.myhome....).

Indicators when the cover is open: Ethernet blinks green and Radio blinks amber continuously). If Aps cover is closed, the indicator ring is running through sequence of green, red and amber.

I did install a TFTP server on my laptop and copied the image I downloaded from Cisco which I believe is correct one for autonomous mode (c1130-k9w7-tar.124-10b.JA.tar) and copied it to TFTP-Root folder. Then I connected 1130-AG to the same network segment as my laptop (192.168.2.xxx, DHCP server is running on ASA).  I can't restart the device even if I press the "Mode" button (which is I believe the reset button also) for more than 10 sec - there is no difference in indication and nothing coming up on TFTP server window.

Please help me flash this AP. I may need some details how to do so as this is my first Cisco AP and I have no experience using TFTP and flashing Cisco equipment at all.

I've tried power cycling the AP with Mode button pressed down without any success also. Is there any other way to load this new image? Or maybe I should use Console port?

Just found something online and will try it:

Follow these steps to revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode by loading a Cisco IOS release using a TFTP server:

Step 1 The static IP address of the PC on which your TFTP server software runs should be between 10.0.0.2 and 10.0.0.30.

Step 2 Make sure that the PC contains the access point image file (such as c1200-k9w7-tar.122-15.JA.tar for a 1200 series access point) in the TFTP server folder and that the TFTP server is activated.

Step 3 Set the timeout value on the TFTP server to 30 seconds.

Step 4 On the PC where the TFTP server is located, perform these steps:

a. Disable any software firewall products, such as Windows firewall, ZoneAlarm firewall, McAffee firewall, or others.

b. Ensure all Windows files are visible. From Windows Explorer, click Tools > Folder Options > View > Show hidden files and folders.

Step 5 Rename the access point image file in the TFTP server folder to c1200-k9w7-tar.default for a 1200 series access point, c1130-k9w7-tar.default for an 1130 series access point, c1240-k9w7-tar.default for a 1240 series access point, and c1250-k9w7-tar.default for a 1250 series access point.

Step 6 Connect the PC to the access point using a Category 5 (CAT5) Ethernet cable.

Step 7 Disconnect power from the access point.

Step 8 Press and hold MODE while you reconnect power to the access point.

Step 9 Hold the MODE button until the status LED turns red (approximately 20 to 30 seconds) and then release.

Step 10 Wait until the access point reboots, as indicated by all LEDs turning green followed by the Status LED blinking green.

Step 11 After the access point reboots, reconfigure it using the GUI or the CLI.

Light wieght APs cannot be converted to autonomus APs.

Autonomous APs can be converted to Lightweight but not the other way around. This is the reason your instructions say " revert from LWAPP mode to autonomous mode" the AP hd to originaly be an autonomus AP and have been converted to Light wieght mode in the past for this to work.

Sorry to give you the bad news but scince Cisco sells the Light wieght APs for less monney they don't want you to be able to upgrade them. To use a LWAPP you need a controler.

2 Sniper98G:

With all my due respect this is not correct. I was able to convert it following the steps above as described in this document:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/conversion/lwapp/upgrade/guide/lwapnote.html#wp161111

(document name: "Upgrading Autonomous Cisco Aironet Access Points to Lightweight Mode") - it is somewhere in the second half of the document in the section named "Converting a Lightweight Access Point Back to Autonomous Mode ".

But there are some things you have to do which were not in this document.

1. Set your PC with static IP 10.0.0.2 - 30 and subnet mask 255.0.0.0, leave GW and DNS empty. I connected them first to Linksys RV042 router with DHCP but Linksys does not allow me to use /8 (255.0.0.0) mask and with any other mask it would not flash.
2. SolarWinds TFTP server used, all default settings. Make sure you rename your image as described.
3. After successful update I connected both devices to the router with DHCP enabled for 10.0.0.xxx and power cycled the AP. It picked up IP 10.0.0.3 and I was able to access web-based configuration utility - just open the browser and type http://10.0.0.3 (or whatever IP is listed in your DHCP server status list). The default user/pass is Cisco / Cisco (case sensitive).

Here is the the guide: http://cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/access_point/1130/quick/guide/ap1130qs.html
