Question

wifi setup options with multiple access points

Asked by: reddal

Hi,

I've moved to a new house - which is big and has thick walls.

My wifi access point doesn't have the range to fill the house - so I want to install more.

Ideally I would connect all the access points onto my wired ethernet LAN - so there would be no AP-AP comms needed.

However how do I set that up - ie do I setup all the APs with the same SSID and same channel (won't they get in each others way?), or with the same SSID but far apart channels, or maybe just seperate SSIDs on different channels.

Idealy the fact there are different APs would be transparent to users in the house - ie they just see one wifi network which has good coverage everywhere.

thanks for your advice - reddal

Well,

You can set up your APs in a repeater mode, which will allow you to extend the range of your home wireless network.

An initial guidance is available here: http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/1571601
and here: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx
and here: http://www.wireless-nets.com/resources/tutorials/wi-fi_repeaters.html

In the mean-time I'll try and provide link(s) for step-by-step guide(s) to do this, if you can tell me the make and the model of your current AP (The AP needs to support Wireless Distribution System (WDS) mode.

Hope this helps.

Warm regards,
Sarang

I do not know what type of router you have but the AP needs to support this.

I have set it up a couple of times on Billion AP.
Used the same SSID and Channel.
I had to, on the APs provide each other with the others MAC address.

The function you are looking for is WDS - Wireless Distribution System
------------------------------------------------
The other way is to setup one AP to your ISP and then Backhaul to the other AP.

Hi,

Set the SSID to be the same on each AP.

You'll need different channel numbers for adjacent APs.

If your using 802.11 b/g then make sure the channel numbers are 6 apart.

e.g. 1, 6, 11
