Attempting to extend the range of a current router. Is another router or a range extender the best option?

It seems that using a range extender is the easiest option to propagate a WiFi signal over an entire, very large, house. However, I've read on EE and on other sites that it's not as straight forward as one may think.

Would it work better if I set up another WiFi router on the second floor and simply have them both broadcast the same SSID on the same channel?
