The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

My Laptop is 'Connected' but I cannot Ping

Tags: Wireless Connection Problems
I have a wireless router.   It is New.   I have configured it with WPA, changed SSID, and changed channel to #2.

-   I have one wired computer connected.   It works fine.
-   I have one laptop with wireless connection working fine.

The trouble is my 2nd Laptop.   It connects (acquires all DHCP info).   The IP address, the Subnet, the Default Gateway is the same as the other laptop...... However, I cannot get it to PING anything.    It shows the Wireless is 'Connected' to my SSID with a Strong Signal.

The laptop working is a DualBand Wireless Card (I assume this to be B and G).   I am running G only from the New Router.

I have searched Google and many questions here.   I have run the WINSOCK fix, I can ping the loopback address (127.0.0.1).  I have done ipconfig /renew - which aquires the same IP address.

I am wondering if it retained some information from previous Wireless router.  (it was 192.168.2.1 and now I have 192.168.0.1).   However, ipconfig /all shows all same info (except IP address) as working laptop.

Any Suggestions?

Can you ping back to the laptop from the wired desktop?

Is this an internal wireless?

In doing an ipconfig everything show up just fine, and you cannot ping out or in, I would say you have a bad wireless card.

It appears as though the receiver portion of the unit is working, but we do not know about the transmitting.

Some APs and wireless routers can see what client are connected. Does it see your laptop?

Some APs and wireless routers may restrict or not allow access by MAC address. Make sure that unit's MAC is entered as an accepted MAC in your wireless router.

Just a few thoughts.

"The IP address, the Subnet, the Default Gateway is the same as the other laptop"

The IP address is showing the same as the other laptop??? Or am I just misunderstanding. If it IS the same IP, you might want to check your router settings about how many IP's it's allowed to assign. I had a similar problem where I purposely set the number to 3 (the number of computers in our house) as an added security measure. However, I was pulling my hair out when a firned came over but couldn't connect...I added one more IP slot and he up and going.

I would also change the router back to mixed mode B/G for the time being until you can isolate the problem. If it's a PC card that came with it's own drivers, you might want to uninstall the drivers/software, reboot, let Windows find the new hardware, but only install the drivers via Found New Hardware Wizard...don't install the wireless utility that came with the card.

You may want to try and disable windows firewall on all of your machines. I've had it cause issues with ping and other basic services. Especially if you can ping in one direction but not the other i.e. machine 1 to machine 2: happy ping responses. machine 2 to machine 1: no joy.

Hope this helps

I have a couple of  questions:
- What is the O/S of the problem laptop?
- When you say you are unable to ping, do you impy that you can access Internet/web sites?
- Have you tried doing a traceroute to an external website? it may tell you where things are going wrong

Hope this helps.

This is an XP machine, I cannot Ping the local router and therefore cannot browse the web.   I cannot do a trace route because I cannot get beyond the router.

Update:  If I disable (uncheck) the internet protocol and reboot, there is no IP info for the wireless connection (obvious).   If I add it back, I get DHCP connection and I can Ping the router.   It all works.

As soon as I reboot, It doesn't work again.

What COnnection manager software are you using?

Look at...

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Networking/Windows_Networking/Internet_Protocols/Q_23098257.html#a20706468

as "possibly" the software that is controlling your connection is not allowing you to configure it properly.

Have you tried repairing the problematic connection?
