Question

Trouble installing new Lenovo Network Controller driver after reinstalling Windows XP

Asked by: jcludwick

I just reinstalled windows XP on my IBM T42, went to Lenovo to download drivers, found what seem to be the appropriate one, downloaded it, used the device manager to try to install it, and am consistently getting an error message that says the wizard cannot find the necessary software. I have successfully installed other drivers using this method but can't get the wireless one. Any advice would be appreciated!

I would double check the installed driver.

Are you certain that it is for the hardware in your laptop? Lenovo (IBM) used several different wireless NICs in the laptops.

Just make certain that the software/drivers you downloaded are the correct ones and install under an administrator account.

Thanks for the feedback John, though I am not quite sure how to act on it. How do I know what kind of hardware I have? The icon in the device manager is a yellow question mark. Also, if I haven't password protected my computer, do I need to log in as an administrator? (Not sure how I'd do that either given that there's currently only one user profile.

Your an administrator in any event with only the one account. I am sure no password is set yet.

You really need to research the download site for your Model.

I have here an R50e. The main way to find what is included in it is by Model type.. In my case it would be a Type 1842-STU.

Check the different types of adapters listed and available in the download site. If you are still not sure, try another.... you probably won't mess it up; it just will not work and you will get the yellow ? mark.

Also, try an older one first. Some may need to have XP SP2 installed.

For my laptop there are two available for wireless. An Intel PRO 2200 and a default adapter.
Here is the link I used:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/homeLenovo.do

Lastly, you may have to call IBM/Lenovo and see if they can help.

Hi If that fails, the best way to reinstall the OS is using the 'Access IBM' Button, you press it just as the laptop boots. If you use this method then all correct drivers are instaled.

If you had a new hard drive you can not use the above option, but you can get the install CD set from Lenovo, but I would suspect finding the right driver would be easier, like john says, if the one you tried doesn't work try the other one from the download site.

I too have a T42

Well, continued thanks to both of you, though I still haven't solved my problem. I was actually in the middle of installing service pack 2 when i got your second response, John, so I proceeded with that; no dice. The link you posted is the same one I have been using; to my eye there are 2 options there for wireless downloads - 1 for everything but windows NT and one for the rest. I have now tried them both, and still get that error message.
I also tried the Access IBM button, which then took me to a blue screen with options about normal booting, etc. - I went with the escape/ normal version, but nothing's changed.
I discovered this in the under properties of the network controller: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4220&SUBSYS_27118086&REV_05\4&39A85202&0&10F0
and from that think I have driverIntel PRO/Wireless 2200BG. SO I went to the intel site and selected the 220BG driver but then got a message saying "Wireless LAN hardware not detected" ... which confuses me since this computer was on my wireless router with no problem before I did the windows reinstall.
Does any of this make sense?
Thanks again --

Always go with drivers from the IBM/lenovo web site. I made the mistake of upgrading one of my drivers one time from an update as well as the latest from the manufacturer and nothing worked.

Simply, if you have working hardware and you have the correct driver, it will work. If either or bad, nothing will work.

So.... I am out of advice!

I will of course stay tuned.

Ok, I'll cease and desist on my intel downloads. I called Lenovo and they said $70 to speak with someone. Nice. I'll poke around more, but thanks again for trying!

I ended up downloading an intel driver - against recommendations, I know, but the Lenovo stuff wasn't working any way I tried it. So far, so good! Thanks again for the help.
