I have a 3-notebook LAN,connected wirelessly at home. One of them (HP) cannot browse (with either explorer or firefox) using the wireless connection BUT can using a fixed connection.Tthe wireless adapter tells me that I am connected at 54 Mbps with an excellent signal. Also I can ping a public IP address with successful replies at an average of 30 ms. When I take the notebook to my office I CAN succesfully browse the internet using the corporate wireless network. In both cases we are using WEP - 64 bits. I have tried at home using the WPA key as well but with the same problem. Meanwhile the other 2 home notebooks are working perfectly wirelessly at home. We have upgraded the wireless adapter drivers but made no difference.
Hi, It looks like there is a problem with obtaining DNS settings on your wireless connection. Are you using DHCP on both home and office networks? You should also check your home router to make sure the DHCP server is working properly. You mentioned that you can ping external IPs, could you try pinging a domain e.g. www.google.com and the IP 216.239.59.147 If you can do with IP but can't with domain then it is a dns problem for sure. Also to help troubleshoot could you post the output for ipconfig /all from command prompt.
hi thanks for your input i forgot to mention that yes indeed when i do ping a domain it does resolve to the correct public IP address. Also in terms of the DHCP settings, if there was an issue why wouldn't it affect the other 2 home notebooks? At the moment I cannot produce the ipconfig results. I will try later but everything appears normal
