HP Pavilion running XP media center (yecch) wireless stopped working blue lite does not activate, and in device mngr no wireless adapters appear, even when reloaded thru HP's web site, can connect via LAN, also can use USB wireless adapter just fine, stumped please help

I appreciate your effort, but I know how to toggle the switch in front, if you read my question you would notice that the wireless adapter does not appear in the device manager at all and I have tried reloading the BIO's as well as installing new drivers all of which goes nowhere. The built in wireless is non existent, I have installed and tried USB 3rd party wireless adapters and they work fine. I have been all over the HP support site to no avail.
I have had the same intermediate problem with my friend's HP TX1000, e.g. the wireless indicator is either off or orange, the device is missing from device mgr. I learned that:
- XP hides disabled devices; the wireless icon is there but hidden. I still haven't figured out how to get XP to behave;
-the wireless chipset is/was a major recall item in similar models of HP laptops, with the same symptoms;
-HP support is useless. Unless that particular model is recalled, "it's Windows fault". I also got a USB Linksys which works fine;
-finally, removed as much crap as possible from Windows, including anything installed after the machine was new. Now the wireless *usually* works, but occasionally not.
Resolution was easy; she bought a MacBook. Couldn't be happier.
I never did find a solution, but the whole bloody m/b went south shortly thereafter. The stupid thing wound up on eBay as salvage. I'd get rid of it, were I you, and generally stay away from HP. Their after sale service is the pits, and I am not impressed with product quality, either, *especially* their new printers. They're are cheaply and poorly made.

So you push the button on the front edge, but it does not make the blue LED toggle on and off?
e.g. that would be items 4 and 5, respectively, in the attached diagram.
