Question

Can't connect to non broadcast wireless networks

Asked by: CorpTechLLC

I have an HP EliteBook 6930p with Windows XP Pro SP3 installed. It cannot connect to wireless networks that don't broadcast the SSID. I've tried using the Windows and HP wireless utilities with no success. All drivers are up to date. The check box that says connect even if the network is not broadcasting is checked.

Try setting the router to broadcast SSID then connect. Is there any issue's

once you have done that and allowed the laptop to cache the router's details. change the router back to not broadcast the ssid and see if the laptop will connect automatically.

When you setup the connection on your laptop, have you manually put in the SSID?

I did manually enter all wireless settings. The SSID is not being broadcast so I had to enter it manually. If I turn of the non-broadcast it does connect. I turned non broadcast back on and it still worked. The problem with this is the user travels and may not have the ability to turn the broadcast setting on off and on to cache the network.

Is there any reason why you want to hide the SSID.  For network security, the hidden SSID is very low.  Most of us prefer to have WPA or WPA2 and let the SSID broadcast.

Sorry to lead you to a different path.

I choose to use all methods of wireless security on my network. I have no problems with other wireless cards with this setup. My users do travel so they will run into wireless networks that don't broadcast eventually. I need to resolve the issue and not change my setup for 3 problem laptops.
