Question

Verizon Wireless Air Card installation problems

Asked by: Ditch_Doctor

I am attempting to simply install a verizon wireless air card (Pantech UM175) on a dell inspiron 8600.  I loaded the vz access manager software (version: 6.10.10-2247b)) from the cd, and then connected the air card.  Thats when problem started.....instead of loading the driver from the plug & play air card, it activated the windows new hardware installation wizard, and the vz software didn't recognize the air card.  I tried uninstalling & reinstalling the s/w several times, and checked the device manager & event viewer but couldn't find the culprit.  I called verizon tech support and after doing all the troubleshooting steps I had already done and the air card still not being recognized, they assumed the air card was bad and I went back to the verizon store and they replaced it.  They tried to install it in the store but had the same problem, so I brought it home and tried uninstalling norton internet security, and disabling the firewall but it did not help.  So I then tried testing the s/w & air card by installing it on a new laptop and it worked perfectly.  I re-examined the configuration on the original laptop and it's resources are consistant with the verizon s/w & h/w requirements - it has an intel centino mobile processor @ 1.5Ghz & 1GB of ram with integrated audio & video that has all passed benchmark testing.  The only thing I can conceive is that there is possible software that might be in conflict, except that verizon local head of tech support says that they have a rediculously low margin of s/w conflict that they see on a regular basis - almost never.  I've scoured all of the verizon tech support forums with no luck, so I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have.  Thanks....DD

Did they have you remove VZ manager, pantech from add/remove programs as well as go to the c:\program files and delete any pantech or verizon folders then reboot and reinstall.  Everytime I've installed on of these cards part of the process is when promted you insert card, windows hardware kick in and installs it and the verizon install continues.

I had this same issue when installing the VZAccess manager on a Vista machine.  I fixed it by starting the "Telephony" service:

GO to start-->run-->type in services.msc-->scroll down to Telephony right click on it and select START

After the service is started, try re-installing the VZAccess software.

I tried starting the telephony service but received "error code 1053:  The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion".  I'm at the point to consider backing up the pc, and reinstalling XP unless someone has any other suggestions.  Thanks again for all help!  DD

Because telephony wasn't running & giving me errors, and I had disabled everything else without resolve, I ended up whiping the hdd & reinstalling xp which fixed the problem.  Thanks for your suggestions!  DD
