Question

WUSB600N dropping connection constantly

Asked by: changjia

I have a Toshiba P105-S6177 laptop that has a built in Wireless G card in it.  I bought an external WUSB600N usb adapter to work with my WRT610N simultaneous dual band router.  I configured both bands (2.4 and 5GHz) and set the appropriate security and encryption.  I constantly drop my connection on my laptop with that USB adapter.  I have tried talking to Linksys tech support and made some changes to the router settings to no avail.  It is still happening several times a day.  It is very annoying.  I almost want to switch to using the built in wireless G, even if the speeds are slower.  Any help would be appreciated.

Did you check for firmware upgrades for the router? Have you tried using different channels? Did you disable the internal Wireless NIC (maybe there is a switch on the case or a function key combination to turn it off)? If you are only using "N" speeds, set that selection to be the only speed. Also check your PC for power-saving options on your USB ports, and turn those off.

Hi rindi,

To answer your questions my router has the latest firmware available which is from 1/09.  I have tried different channels but I am not sure what channels the 2.4 and 5GHz should be on.  I read that changing the encryption from WPA2 to WPA will fix the dropped connections issue.  I think I am still having the problem.  When I use the N router, i do disable the internal G card and turn the switch off of the case.  I did originally set the mode to Wireless N only but linksys tech support wanted me to switch it to Mixed.  Your thoughts??

Mixed mode can cause issues, particularly if something is sending out packets using "b" mode. So as long as you only need the router in "n" mode, and if all wireless products that will connect are of the same manufacturer, "n" mode will usually give you better results.

I've only had problems with the different encryption modes if one of the devices doesn't support one of the modes. But being "n" they should all be new enough to support the more secure encryption of WPA2. Sometimes I have also found that a NIC only supports TKIP and not AES, but again, that is with older devices. New products should support all those modes.

I have seen issues with "n" mode though, and that is probably due to the fact that it isn't properly standardized yet, so even if both devices are from the same manufacturer I've had connection issues. But those issues I had over one year ago, things should have improved meanwhile.

Maybe you can try the special 3rd party firmware, as far as I know linksys should work with it, but you'd have to do that at your own risk....
