Question

Can't get NetGear wireless router working

Asked by: williampeck

basic home network, 2 wired computers and 2 wireless computers.

Everything was good then wireless component got knocked out, good chance when electricity went out.

Now wireless doesn't work at all. Neither wireless computer now even see the wireless router.

I can get around on the wireless settings page. When I opened it up, there was no wireless WEP network, so I re-set it up:

name: myhomenetwork

Security options: WEP

Key 1: my home phone #.

Advanced:
checked: enable SSID broadcast

still, neither PC (1 MAC, 1 windows)

everything was great for a long time (until the electricity went out)

I'd remove the connection on the desktop computers and re-setup the wireless connection making you have all the correct settings.

If it doesn't work, then there's a chance the wireless router got zapped enough to where this part of the router is broken although not likely since I'd guess that ( normally?) electrical surge damage would make the router not work at all meaning you would not even be able to login to it using the web interface.

to clarify:
( I screwed up that paragraph)
I'd remove the software connection configuration on the desktop computers wireless settings and re-setup the wireless connection on these making sure you have all the correct settings to match the wireless setting on the access point..

still no luck, it seems like it is a setting and not that the wireless component got zapped.

From Router status, wireless port:

Name (SSID): williampeck
Region: United States
Channel: 11
Mode: g and b
Wireless AP: Off (what is this ?)
Broadcast name: -

I've reviewed the manual at http://kbserver.netgear.com/pdf/wgt624v3_ref_manual_25Apr05.pdf

Is there any way I can test this besides having a PC try to access it ? (A Windows and Mac cannot even see the wireless, but both can hard-wire to it and get to the internet)

Sorry, I was away from EE for a while, here's a reply:

On this line, it looks like it is turned off?
"Wireless AP: Off (what is this ?)"
From page 7-1:
"The Wireless port LED is lit. (Note: The LED is off in factory default setting and is
enabled/LIT after you run the Configuration Assistant.)"
