Killing Intel Wifi Link 5100 AGN in VAIO...default 7 driver, VAIO 7 driver, VAIO Vista Driver, driver from Intel site, all failing, why?
Hi there;
Before reading the question, keep that in mind that the wireless driver in the device manager has no x or ? signs and 7 says ok, I recognize your driver perfectly without an issue, so put it simply, my problem looks like some halloween issue.
I have a problem with reputated VAIO and Windows 7.
The issue starts while I was installing 7, 7 says ok, let's connect net, I input my credentials which is 8 character with WPA (not WPA 2 since router has no support for this)
Authentication is as PSK
Encryption TKIP
Then I failed to connect my wireless network. I say ok, let's try out for VAIO original 7 driver and no joy again, everytime it fails and I got windows was unable to connect to error.
I say ok, let's try out VAIO Vista driver, same thing occurs.
I say ok, let's try out Intel's original driver that it detects in its site, same thing occurs.
I say, hmm, although I uninstall the drivers from device manager, let's delete those drivers manually. I found out all drivers from detail and delete them but no joy.
Then I tried out hdwwiz.exe and manually adding driver with the above combinations and still no joy.
Then, I tried out to configure the adapter settings from advanced tab by clicking configure on the adapter.
I changed Roaming Aggresiveness as highest and again no joy with above combinations. I changed some other settings there too but no joy and everytime I uninstall and install the driver, it gets its original settings.
I created wireless profiles according with my router settings in my machine but still I cannot have the wireless.
Note that the wireless connection is working perfectly with my other laptop and even in the same laptop with Ubuntu.
So, what should I do right now?
Please do not say change your router. I cannot.
I haven't tried with other wifi but I need my 7 to be working with this router, so even it's working with other wifi, it is not the case.
All the steps in this question are also applied with no password authentication and WEP and 802.1x authentaications too...
It was working in the preinstalled Vista Home Premium 64-bit.
I am now in 7 Pro 64-bit. (the very final release)
Imho, this is the hardest question of among all my questions.
A clue: With the intel driver from its site, I have created a profile, and it gets with WPA for about 5 mins then gone, note that I also reset the modem for 10 seconds, also cold boot the modem and 7 too for each steps.
I can reach the modem by typing its IP with my LAN.
All the 7 firewalls are closed. No antivirus. No virus since it's a scratch.
Another laptop I talked above which has Intel 3945ABG can connect with the settings.
It has the settings as:
Adhoc 802.11b/g 11
802.11a 36
Mixed Mode: CTS-to-self enabled
Right now, VAIO has advanced properties as:
802.11n Channel Width for band 2.4 20 MHz Only
802.11n Channel Width for band 5.2 Auto
802.11n Mode Enabled
Ad Hoc Channel 802.11b/g 11
Ad Hoc QoS Mode WMM Disabled
Fat Channel Intolerant Disabled
Mixed Mode Protection CTS-to-self Enabled

Wireless Mode 6. 802.11a/b/g
Driver details:

Those processes consumed 5 hours of my life and it worths a 10000 points imho. I need Doctor House:)

The issue the working one is in XP and the driver is different as you can see above, so no point in USB...
Well, needless to say the key I type is right...
Why WEP? My method WPA is working perfectly. Even, I switch to any encryption or no encryption, the problem persists.

Nope, I really don't like the utilities coming with VAIO so I haven't installed a bit.

By the way, do you recommend removing the WIFI driver coming?
I mean first, removing the driver files by viewing driver details etc. then uninstalling the driver with a right click on wifi?
Then, reapply steps above? (Even I tried before, but for you, I can redo)
Note that the wifi is working perfectly under Ubuntu ridiculously.
It's very disappointing for VAIO and 7 that they have this kind of conflict.
I am not sure wep is the cure since wpa enc. is working perfectly under ubuntu. why on earth does 7 have a problem with encryption? I give a try for your solution too especially your intel configuration could be the cure.
Note that, I have right now very scratch install of 7. But it's not a issue to mess with the drivers since I also created a recovery partition for my 7 already. So, I will try all of your suggestions.
Best regards.

By the way, the first time, I plug LAN, it says select a location, the network I will be using is trusted. So, home? The reason asking this is, somehow, whatever I select, I can see it in NetworkingSharingCenter and with the name of wifi connection on mine...But even no wifi connection is selected (or selected and attempting to connect with no luck), LAN displays the wifi name. I will have the shots of those to be visual...Keep watching...
First, let me change the settings, then your intel driver and be back soon...

Through my search, the issue generally for Intel 5100 are as:
1) No connection
2) Low connection
3) Led is blinking
I think this can be applied to all of them...Ok let me reboot the machine...Note that LAN and WIFI has seems to connect same network while LAN was plugged...Now, let me reboot and see it...

ok as i suspected after a reboot, not connection regardless of connectivity of LAN

This seems not a driver issue maybe a Sony issue but I really suspect 7. The key point is LAN has the name of wifi connection. Above the very screenshot, they have both, when I unplug LAN, wifi lives on, but a reboot changed everything but what...
ASKER
ok, while I was writing above lines, the wifi is still trying to authenticate...I think authentication process takes too long.
I strongly recommend for the ones who will search a solution for this problem to have a profile for their connection, without it simply doesn't connect but with a profile, he works on it no matter what and after 5 minutes from reboot, he connects. Again LAN is plugged....

this may bring the issue to a lower secure authentication WEP as a friend above said.

Moreover Bluetooth seems interesting since I use wireless switch on VAIO, wireless is NOT gone, bluetooth is gone... (I am not sure if bluetooth must be gone after switch on/off, but wireless stay but no connection in the taskbar...)

I will have a scratch install and install Sony driver ones and wait for a driver for it...
Tomorrow, at a public place, I will be probing wifi connection and if it would fail, then most probably, it's not a modem/router issue.

jazzlllove, I have totally the same problem with my VGN-TT1RLN
It's intresting that if you plug in the cable into your LAN port it "save" parameters and easily connects to Wireless from the same network. And in several minutes or hours it disconnects, so unstable.
So, still no way out for this issue?

nope, but as I probed it in several areas, I can say, intel 5100 doesn't like old wifi devices:)
ASKER
The trick with old wifi stuff could be creating a profile for them and in that case, Intel AGN 5100 constantly tries for the connection and get it eventually.
