I know how to set up ssid and wpa myself.

Im wondering is it advantageous for laptops roaming between access points on the same network that have the same ssids?

In a non tech way it stops the APs along the way asking  - well who are you lapotop? i.e. save on authentication?

If it isnt an advantage for roaming laptops I will stick with the way Ive been doing things.

Yes,
but don't forget all APs to same SSID, and set the APs channel to 1,6,11:
