Wireless printer connection under Windows XP/SP2

After installing an EDIMAX PS-1206UWg PRINT SERVIER USB to connect my Canon PIXMA iP8500 printer wirelessly, I can no longer run the printer monitor utility (which shows me when to replace the ink cartridges etc. etc.) and the print window shows "printer not online" even though it does succeed in  printing.
