I have a client that is using a 3COM 11G PC Card in a IBM T30 laptop. He is accessing a unknown 11g Access Point in a Marina's Club House. His yacht is approximately 100m from the Club House and currently his connection is intermittent at best.
Does anybody know of a 11g PC card that has an extended arial that could be put up the mast of the yacht or any other way to help increase the efficienty of his current setup. Any suggestions would be gretly appreciated

hers a list of wifi antenae, in dutch im afraid but the product manes are there and pictures prices etc, might give you a good start. it could also be a good idea to google for people who are setting up large free wifi networks like WiFi Leiden or WiFi Glasgow. these guys use all sorts of weird combos of antena and well document their creations

Basically you just need a laptop card w/ a jack for an external antenna. Then you can use some low db loss coax and whatever omni or directional antenna you can find. You will only be able to do so much from your end though. At some point you would have to bump up the output from the access point. This will pick up weak signals but not non-existant ones!
You best bet would be to move the access point in the club to an outdoor location and use a directional antenna (e.g. patch type) to broadcast across the marina.
Is the user inside the yacht or outside? can he use the wireless network from ontop of his yacht? if so, putting an outdoor antenna and connecting it to his laptop will do the trick. An alternative would be to get an AP that can be put in bridge mode, connect an high gain antenna to AP and plug the notebook via cat5. You could also use the AP in a repeater mode.
