Question

Linksys WPC11 Problem

Asked by: LeftofCool

I share a broadband connection via a WAP router. Recently, my wireless computer has been having problems connecting to my internet connection and it routinely connects at 2mbps with no packets being sent or received. If I go into the tcp/ip properties of my wireless card, enter random digits for the ip address, subnet mask, default gateway, dns server, and alternate dns server, save them and then go back and set it to automatically set an IP address and dns server, the card will connect at 11mbps and send and receive packets and I can access the internet. I am consistently having to do this everytime I take the card out and put it back in or boot my computer up with the card inside. I have tried switching channels on the router, restoring to factory defaults, upgrading the firmware of the router, and even uninstalling and reinstalling the wireless card, all to no avail. I have worked with several Linksys reps, none of them are sure what is happening. I am certain it's not a virus or spyware. I have the latest drivers for the card and the latest firmware for the router. My wired computer works fine consistently although it's not with me at the moment because of unlrelated power supply issues. The card seemed to disappear out of the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the task bar, and soon after that these problems started. The card is installed according to device manager, however. I need to try the card in a different laptop, but are there any suggestions out there? This is driving me crazy.

Try disabling the linksys software that runs in the system tray and setting it up using the windows settings in My Netowrk Places.  I have found that windows can fight with the linksys software on some laptops.  This has fixed many of my users problems with the wireless dropping using linksys cards.

The fact that your system does not see your card in the safely remove device output seems to indicate a possible hardware problem...

Rather than changing the tcp/ip configurations to "reset" the card, try one of two things.  Go to start -- connect to -- show all connections and right click on the wireless connection icon for your card.  From this menu you can disable and then able the card, or try clicking on the repair option.  Either of these procedures should quickly reconfigure the wireless card.

Good luck..

I'll try these suggestions when I get home. Also, to the first response, I don't have any Linksys software starting up at all. There's nothing in msconfig to suggest its been disabled either.

Something I should've added before...I was in a hotel and was going to use their high speed connection through their wired router in the room. I connected, and nothing worked until I put my wireless card in, did the manual reset I mentioned above, and then the connection worked and I could take the card out and the wired connection worked fine. It seems after I start my computer, I'll do the reset, then the card works regardless of how many times I remove it and insert it, but if I restart the computer, I have to do the reset all over again. Should I look at reinstalling some of the TCP/IP services or something?

Go to:
Start => Settings => Control Panel => System => Hardware => Device Manager.
1. Uninstall the WPC11 card from Device Manager.
2. Reboot the machine.
3. After machine is rebooted insert the card and let windows auto configure it.

This should work. If you use different profiles for using your computer at home, work and outside then you should switch to that profile before un-installing WPC11 card.

If you have an additional software firewall, try disabling it. I had a similar problem while running ZoneAlarm Pro, and I fixed it by disabling it. Exit the firewall program. To disable it from running on startup, go to Start>Run>msconfig>hit enter. On the System Configuration Utility's "Startup" tab, uncheck the option for your firewall.

If your running XP, try disabling Wireless Zero Configuration. Start>Run>services.msc. Find "Wireless Zero configuration utility" and stop it if it's running. Then hit properties, and change its startup type to "disabled."
