Question

Using two Linksys WAP54g access points, one configured as a true AP and one as a AP client

Asked by: BryanC

Here is my setup.  I have a 4 port Netgear router (wired, not wireless).  The Netgear router is connected to a cable modem, a PC, and a Linksys WAP54g access point.  The WAP54g is configured to use WPA and has been providing wireless Internet for a laptop.  I have a new desktop computer located in another part of the house that I want to get working wirelessly.  I know I could get a PCI wireless card, but I'm interested in running Linux on the new box and I would rather not deal with WIFI driver issues under Linux.

Therefore, I decided to get another WAP54g, configure it for Access Point Client mode and connect it to the new desktop via a small 4 port hub.  I want to use Access Point Client Mode and not bridging because in bridging mode, both APs can only talk to each other which knocks out the laptop functionality.

I hooked up the new WAP54g and can access it from the new desktop.  I selected AP Client as the access mode and did the site survey.  My other AP was found and selected.  The MAC address of the original AP was discovered and automatically filled in.  My problem is I cannot ping any of the other devices such as the original AP, the Netgear router, or get Internet connectivity.

The original AP is a WAP54g v1.1 model with v2.07, Apr 08, 2004 firmware.  The new AP is a WAP54g v2 model with v2.08, Jan 24 2005 firmware.  The release notes for both firmwares indicate that WPA is supported in the way I'm trying to run.

Does anyone have an idea why this is not working?

Are you trying to ping directly from the 2nd AP or from the PC connected to it? And why don't you want to try a wireless card in the linux PC? It normally doesn't really take that much to setup...

I'm trying to ping from the PC connected to the 2nd AP.  Based on what I've read, it seams like there were too many problems with wireless cards and Linux.  Also, in the two AP config, can the second PC be configured to get a dynamic IP address from the Netgear router (which does DHCP) attached to the first AP?

I'm not sure how these access points are setup, as I don't have a manual and I can't download it. But probably you can setup the system to get the IP from the router. But without manual I can't help any further.

With linux you can get almost any wireless adapter to run. For those which don't already have a linux driver module, you can use the windows drivers and just use a separate driver wrapper, ndiswrapper, to get them working. I'm typing this on a notebook with a dlink pccard wireless adapter that doesn't have a linux driver using Fedora-Core 4, and don't have any problems.

I have an identical setup and for me it is working.

ADSLModem <-> Router <-> WAP54G-AP <...air...> WAP54G-AP-Client <-> Switch <-> wired PC's
                                              <..air...> wireless laptop-1
                                              <..air...> wireless laptop-2

I disabled SSID and enabled MAC-filtering on the AP. However, include both AP and AP-Client MAC-addresses. Seems odd to also include the MAC-address of the AP itself... but it works that way.

I am able to ping the Router both from my wireless laptop as well as the wired-pc having a good ping-time of 1ms even though the signall strength on the AP-client is on average about 47%.

I am not sure whether either WEP or WPA is working. I am sure WPA not because the web-tool says that WPA is not supported. When using WEP the connection between de 2 AP's drops so I assume WEP is neither working. That could be the cause of you problem. But what is the importance of using either WEP of WPA. SSID/Mac-filtering is save enough to keep intruders of your network and normally important data sent to an internet-site is over https and that quite safe, or not? Why using double encryption?

Also have the AP's a fixed IP-address and don't use DHCP for them. Use a different IP-address for both. I used 245 for the AP and 246 for the AP-client. While configuring the AP-client AP make sure you set your TCP/IP setting to a fixed IP-address since the connection between the two AP's can be dropped after a change and you won't be able to connect to the web-tool of the AP-client AP anymore.
