The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Using two Linksys WAP54g access points, one configured as a true AP and one as a AP client

Here is my setup.  I have a 4 port Netgear router (wired, not wireless).  The Netgear router is connected to a cable modem, a PC, and a Linksys WAP54g access point.  The WAP54g is configured to use WPA and has been providing wireless Internet for a laptop.  I have a new desktop computer located in another part of the house that I want to get working wirelessly.  I know I could get a PCI wireless card, but I'm interested in running Linux on the new box and I would rather not deal with WIFI driver issues under Linux.

Therefore, I decided to get another WAP54g, configure it for Access Point Client mode and connect it to the new desktop via a small 4 port hub.  I want to use Access Point Client Mode and not bridging because in bridging mode, both APs can only talk to each other which knocks out the laptop functionality.

I hooked up the new WAP54g and can access it from the new desktop.  I selected AP Client as the access mode and did the site survey.  My other AP was found and selected.  The MAC address of the original AP was discovered and automatically filled in.  My problem is I cannot ping any of the other devices such as the original AP, the Netgear router, or get Internet connectivity.

The original AP is a WAP54g v1.1 model with v2.07, Apr 08, 2004 firmware.  The new AP is a WAP54g v2 model with v2.08, Jan 24 2005 firmware.  The release notes for both firmwares indicate that WPA is supported in the way I'm trying to run.

Does anyone have an idea why this is not working?
