Question

Trying to get Verizon/Audiovox PC5740 BroadbandAccess card to work on Dell laptop

Asked by: swechsler

I have installed the drivers correctly; in fact, I went through it with a Verizon tech several times.

With my laptop, a Dell Inspiron 6000 running XP Home, after inserting the card, XP finds a bunch of USB devices (two NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controllers and several USB Root Hubs, all seen in USB controllers in device manager), even though it is a PCMCIA card (I'm guessing it's USB internally). However, the actual modem hardware doesn't show up (it did on the other machine I tried it on). Verizon said there could be something wrong with my laptop's hardware, but I ran a full diagnostics and everything came up OK. I tried disabling all startup stuff with msconfig, which did not help.

After installing the card's drivers and inserting the card, I get a popup which says "USB Device Not Recognized - One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message."

Clicking the message does nothing useful.

I installed the card on another Dell laptop (this one was a Dell Inspiron 700m, also running XP home) where it worked fine, and I was able to use BroadbandAccess.

One other thing: after every time I try to reinstall the drivers and then insert the card, the machine hangs on shutdown.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Steve

It sounds like a driver conflict.

I would disable as much as possile on the Inspiron 6000 in the device amanger, and try again.

Also see what driver is being used in the M700 - in the device amanger - properties of the modem - drivers tab.

Make sure the same files exist on your machine - Inspiron 6000

Also - remove as much as possible in msconfig- startup stuff.

I hope this helps !

Try completely removing the device and drivers from your system and then reinstalling instead of just reinstalling over the old drivers.
To do this, go into Device Manager with the card still inserted in the PCMCIA slot and remove the device from under Network Adapters (Do not remove anything under USB controllers, those are preinstalled on the system).
Then physically remove the card from the computer, reboot the computer, and try to reinstall according to manufacturer's specifications (sometimes drivers must be loaded before inserting the card and sometimes they should be done after, these are important instructions and should be followed).

Also try downloading the latest drivers from the Audiovox website.  Even if it is the same version, it may help your computer recognize the device better than the install CD.

If these don't work try uninstalling the drivers again, then do a system restore back to a point before you first installed the card.  Then try to do an install according to manufacturer specifications.

Turns out it is a poorly documented hardware bug with the Inspiron. Now  I have to try to get Dell to fix it.

Thanks for the responses.

Hi.
I'm not looking for points on this one...but had the same issues, which I resolved, with a Dell Lattitude D830.
I had to uninstall the verizon software.
Delete the USB objects under the Device manager.
Download the latest BIOS revision for the 830 from the Dell support site...and install.
Reboot (no verizon card installed) under the new bios...let the Windows system install the new USB hardware found.
Let the system settle. Reboot.
Install the verizon software (without the card).
Install the card when prompted.

For me, the solution was in the new BIOS code getting rid of the USB conflicts.

Hope this helps
